Make a stand with Brockway’s new ‘consumer friendly’ retail display units

Brockway Carpets has unveiled its sharp new retail display offering for existing and new retailers alike, purpose designed to showcase latest ranges.

“Offering a consumer friendly solution for our retailers was our top priority,” commented Steve Glover, UK sales manager of Brockway Carpets.

He said: “Retailers can either opt for a multiple number of units, depending on the ranges they want to present to customers in store.

Brockway honours first employee to reach 50 years’ service

Kidderminster’s Brockway Carpets has held a special presentation to celebrate its first employee to achieve 50 years’ service.

The company, which has been creating quality carpets in the town since 1964, put Ray Mallard in the spotlight to recognise his 50 years’ service and dedication to the carpet industry.

Ray was presented with his long service award alongside his wife Mary Mallard by managing director Charles Annable at Brockway’s production site in Hoobrook.

The 65 year old, who has always lived in Kidderminster, joined Brockway in April 1963 when it was a small Axminster and Wilton carpet manufacturer.

He started life at Brockway on the production floor as a bobbin boy at 15 years old and then worked as a weaver within the Axminster department before its closure in 1996. Since then, Ray has worked as a tufting operative, creating the firm’s Bespoke, made to order carpets.

During his 50 years, Ray has seen the family run firm expand and maintain its position as a highly respected and trusted supplier of premium wool rich carpets.

As well as making life-long friends, Ray also met his wife at Brockway more than 37 years ago.

“I left school on the Friday and started my two week trial on the Monday morning and since then, I’ve never looked back,” said Ray.

He commented: “I’ve had many happy days working for Brockway and look forward to even more. It’s great to be a part of a family firm and really feel like you belong.

“My favourite role has to be on the tufting side. Working on your own with the tufting machine, you do feel like your own boss.”

Brockway’s managing director Charles Annable commented: “It is a tremendous pleasure to celebrate Ray’s remarkable achievement of 50 years’ service with Brockway Carpets.

“Ray was already at Brockway when my father and his co-owner Skene Walley acquired the company 49 years ago. He has seen Brockway Carpets grow and establish its position as a leading carpet manufacturer, not only within Kidderminster, but UK-wide.

“It’s thanks to craftsman like Ray and our other long serving employees, that Brockway has developed and maintained a reputation throughout the industry for its signature quality. For this, Ray should be extremely proud.

“Ray has always been dedicated to his role and more recently, he has shown great aptitude by working on our new bespoke carpet range.

Brockway also presented long service awards to employees celebrating 25 years’ service or more including Jeanie Garfield, Wayne Jones, Bob Bush, Fil Vaccaro, Darren Rollings, Mark Daniels, Jane Paczkowski and June Lane.

The company currently employs over 80 people and over 23 per cent of the staff have been with the firm for 25 years or more.

He said: “The new addition of our Bespoke Colour Match Service is already proving popular with retailers and consumers alike. We have already seen this with our Bespoke Akaroa launch, and now our latest Bespoke Solar range.”

Brockway launches ‘essentials Collection’ with value focus

Brockway Carpets is aiming to boost its market share with the introduction of its new ‘essentials Collection’.

Brockway teams up with Wools of New Zealand for new Laneve carpet at Domotex

Kidderminster’s Brockway Carpets has once again teamed up with Wools of New Zealand to produce a concept carpet showcasing the potential of eco-friendly Laneve™ wool.

The carpet, called Fantasia, will be seen for the first time on the WNZ stand – B12 in hall 5 – at January’s Domotex show in Hannover.

The carpet is a neo-natural tweed incorporating four colours: Raven, Buckskin, Lint and Luna, in two 3-ply 100% Laneve™ stipple yarns, resulting in a  contemporary marled broadloom product.

Brockway has also used the yarn in combination with the four plain yarns to create an inspirational co-ordinating stripe.

The concept was developed at Wools of New Zealand’s Centre of Excellence in Ilkley, and the carpet manufactured by Brockway at its Kidderminster factory. Brockway’s managing director Charles Annable believes that the collaboration of leading-edge design with the company’s British manufacturing expertise is creating a stir with its retailers and customers.

“Since the launched of our Vogue range and Designer Collection over the past few years we’ve found a real appetite for ‘carpets with a edge’ – something a bit different from the norm,” he said.

“Our working relationship with Wools of New Zealand’s Centre of Excellence has proved incredibly successful and we’re delighted to be pushing this even further with another stunning concept for Domotex.”

Wools of New Zealand’s Joanna Ramsden, who designed the new carpet, said:

“Fantasia offers the consumer a new direction for fashionable stripes and coordinating carpet.  By combining plain shades with a creative marled yarn , the stripes and stippled broadloom give a multi-textured tweed with a ‘neo-natural edge’.

“The colours of Fantasia reflect the trend towards a mellowing of the monochrome look.  Black remains a dramatic accent but when combined with new shades of vintage white, a blue cast charcoal, a silver grey and a subtle herbal green makes a stunning carpet with a natural and contemporary twist for the floor.

“It’s an approach that can be interpreted in many ways, not least by blending wool with other fibres for both traditional, comforting and glamorous effects – the concept holds lots of exciting possibilities.”

“Brockway are a perfect match for Wools of New Zealand to promote the potential of Laneve™ wool in carpets,” added David Hammond, European Market Manager for Wools of New Zealand.

“Brockway’s design- and eco-conscious customer base coupled with the company’s proactive approach and willingness to diversify makes them an ideal partner.  Like us, they appreciate that the market won’t stand still and are continually looking to develop innovative new products. Fantasia is the latest example of this line of thought.”

Laneve™ is a companion to the Wools of New Zealand brand, going beyond product quality to attest to the sustainability and traceability of the wool itself. Laneve™ branded products are made from 100% wool and provide assurance of animal welfare, with strict codes of practice covering animal health, nutrition and safety, land management and non-intensive farming practice. Wools of New Zealand is working with around 30 partners in the in the US and Europe to build the Laneve™ brand around the world.

Brockway adds stripes to Jubilee range

Kidderminster’s Brockway Carpets has added to its recently-launched Jubilee range of wool rich carpets with a selection of co-ordinating stripes.

The nine new striped designs pick up on the colours in Jubilee’s plain carpets, which range from deep, lush black, chocolate and burgundy to fresh, delicate pinks, lilac and greys. Each striped carpet features five of the Jubilee palette of colours and so can co-ordinate with several of the plain carpets.

The addition of Jubilee stripes is reminiscent of Brockway’s Vogue range of striped and plain carpets, introduced to great acclaim and the forerunner of the company’s successful Designer Collection launch in 2010.

Part of the Classic Collection, Jubilee is a range of top quality wool rich carpets featuring 80%  pure new wool, 10% nylon, and 10% polyester meltbond, which together help ensure a hard wearing, long lasting carpet with clearly defined good looks.

As well as an extensive choice of forty on-trend colours to choose from, purchasers have the option of three levels of luxury: Silver, for general domestic and moderate commercial use; Gold, for heavy domestic and general commercial use; and Diamond, the maximum luxury option for heavy domestic and heavy commercial use.  Jubilee Stripes are available only in Diamond quality and in 4m width.

“Jubilee is designed to be the flagship of our Classic Collection, and the addition of these stunning stripes extends the carpets’ versatility and adds an extra dimension to their appeal,” commented Brockway managing director Charles Annable.

“The popularity of co-coordinating plains and stripes was more than proven at the time of our Vogue launch and we’re delighted to offer even more choice and usability to the increasingly popular Jubilee range.”

Brockway’s Jubilee adds to the magic of London Design Festival

Brockway Carpets was chosen by one of the UK’s hottest young furniture designers to help create an exclusive ‘Salon’ exhibition as part of the recent London Design Festival.

Lee Broom, whose work has regularly featured in the national press, picked ‘Black Magic’ from Brockway’s Jubilee range to enhance the dramatic, intimate and surreal environment he created in his Shoreditch studio to showcase his Salon collection of 1930’s-inspired furniture.

The high quality wool-rich carpet – in deepest black with delicate white flecks – perfectly offset Lee’s collection of chairs, sofas and footstools with their soft silhouettes and contrasting stud detailing.

“The Brockway carpet was brilliant,” said Lee. “We chose it because we wanted to have something that reflected the mood of the space. Event carpets are often quite thin and cheap-looking, but we needed something that was ultra-luxurious but durable at the same time.

“The carpet laid really well, and the subtle flecking meant it didn’t show the dirt and we didn’t have to keep vacuuming it. Best of all, it felt really fabulous to walk on – soft and luxurious to the feet, which was all part of the experience I wanted to create.”

The Lee Broom Salon generated much positive press coverage during the London Design Festival, along with many appreciative comments from visitors to the showroom.

Brockway’s Jubilee range was launched earlier this year as the flagship of its Classic Collection of traditional quality carpets. Featuring over 40 colourways, it is available in Diamond, Gold and Silver weights to enhance any room in the home.

Kidderminster’s Brockway Carpets has announced a major new product launch which sets the standard for its Classic Collection of traditional carpets.

Jubilee is a range of top quality wool mix carpets available  in forty colourways and three hardwearing options, extending the versatility of the carpet and making it ideal for almost any location.

The Jubilee range features 80% pure new wool, 10% nylon and 10% polyester meltbond, which together help ensure a hard wearing, long lasting carpet with clearly defined good looks.

As well as an extensive choice of on-trend colours to choose from, purchasers have the option of three levels of luxury: Silver, for general domestic and moderate commercial use; Gold, for heavy domestic and general commercial use; and Diamond, the maximum luxury option for heavy domestic and heavy commercial use.

“The launch of Jubilee, following on from last year’s introduction of our Designer Collection, sees Brockway setting a new standard for our traditional, Classic Collection of carpets,” says Brockway’s managing director, Charles Annable.

“This is a major product launch for us and we’re going to be supporting it heavily with new point of sale units and photography, and we anticipate it will generate a lot of interest amongst retailers and consumers alike.”

The launch of Jubilee follows the recent introduction by Brockway of Akaroa, a new range in conjunction with Wools of New Zealand which offers full traceability to the farm supplying the wool, along with a bespoke colour matching service.

Bespoke colour service for Brockway’s new eco-friendly carpet range

Brockway Carpets has launched a brand new range of environmentally-friendly, fully traceable 100% wool carpets, including a bespoke colour service – a first for the Kidderminster firm.

The Akaroa range uses Laneve wool from Wools of New Zealand –  which is fully traceable back to identifiable farmers who meet a comprehensive range of environmental, social responsibility and animal welfare standards.

All ten Akaroa stock colours – pastel shades ranging from Takamatua Cloud to French Violet – will be available not only in traditional 4m and 5m but also in 1m width for use on stairs or as hallway runners.

The bespoke colour matching service promises to match to virtually any colour reference provided by the customer for minimum orders of 40 sq m. Bespoke colours will be available in 4m and 5m widths.

Wools of New Zealand is working with a small number of carefully selected partners in the in the US and Europe to build the Laneve brand around the world.  Brockway’s Akaroa range follows on its collaboration with Wools of New Zealand on a one-off ‘Wool Impressions’ promotional carpet which was showcased at January’s Domotex Show in Hannover, Germany.

Commenting on the new range, Brockway managing director Charles Annable said:

“Akaroa demonstrates Brockway’s commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly carpet manufacture – a key ethos for the company for many years now.

“People are increasingly looking out for natural, eco-friendly products for their home, and the feedback we’ve been getting from our retailers proves to us that green issues are high on the list of priorities for their customers.

“The addition of a bespoke colour matching service is a new development for Brockway and one we’re confident will prove popular with retailers and consumers.”

David Hammond, European Market Manager for Wools of New Zealand, says the company is delighted that Brockway have embraced the Laneve™ opportunity.

“Brockway has an outstanding reputation in the market; selecting Laneve™ wool from Wools of New Zealand illustrates Brockway’s continued commitment to servicing the market with products of exceptional beauty and integrity.”

Akaroa will be available to buy initially only at specified Wools of New Zealand Premier Partner retailers.

Brockway gets greener

Kidderminster-based Brockway carpets has topped the tables of carpet manufacturers in terms of recycling its waste.

The company. which has been creating quality carpets in the town sice 1964, was named by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) as one of the top performing members of the organisation, which was established to explore viable alternatives to landfill for carpet waste.

According to CRUK’s 2010 figures, Brockway diverts 83% of its carpet production waste from landfill – up from just 17% in 2009. Only one other UK carpet manufacturer could match this figure.

The company’s commitment to sustainable waste disposal and dispersal from landfill complements its record in ‘green’ manufacture’, which includes its ground-breaking Envirobac carpet backing – an effluent-free process with no harmful emissions and less environmental impact. In addition, Brockway has been working closely with its suppliers to create carpets using natural wool from sustainable, traceable sources.

Brockway’s commitment to recycling marks it out as a pioneer in the industry which has an average landfill diversion rate of just 6%. Furthermore, at 83%, Brockway’s rate puts it ahead of the vast majority of CRUK’s membership whose average diversion rate is 53%.

Brockway’s production director Nick Walley said:

“The efforts put in by Brockway in the last 12 months to recycle our waste has been considerable, as the substantial jump in the figures shows. This success would never have occurred without our employees getting behind the concept and coming up with solutions of their own.

“The CRUK figures relate to our Hoobrook manufacturing site – but we’re also committed to cutting waste from our nearby Spennells plant which houses our offices and warehouse. We’re already making big inroads into our sustantial cardboard wastage.”

Hoggard bowled over by Brockway’s carpet

Leicestershire CCC captain and former England fast bowler Matthew Hoggard has chosen the patriotic colours of Brockway Carpets’  stylish Carnaby Union Stripe carpet to bring a touch of British style to his new country home.

Hoggard, a key player in the victorious 2005 England Ashes team, purchased the carpet from Leicester retailer Michael John Flooring, which sponsors the county team.

Michael John Flooring director Simon Manley said: “Matthew was looking for something a bit different and a bit funky for the snug in his new home and loved the patriotic red, white and blue stripe of Brockway’s Carnaby carpet. “He took a real interest in the carpet and was hands-on when it came to helping with fitting to. He’s a real genuine character.”

Both Hoggard and his wife Sarah love the carpet. “It looks awesome – a real quality carpet and fantastic colours!” he said. And fantastic service to- but that’s only what I’d expect from Michael John.”

Michael John Flooring has been stocking Brockway’s Designer Collection – of which Carnaby is the flagship carpet – since it’s launch last summer. “They’re exactly the type of carpets our customers look for, ” said Mr Manley. “We specialise in the middle -to-top-end of the market and our customers are after something more inspiring and design led, so the Designer Collection really fits well into our sales range.”

The Designer Collection was launched in 2010 and builds on Brockway’s established reputation as a manufacturer of quality carpets with nine new ranges inspired by nature, culture, fashion and architecture. An exclusive collection of contemporary styles marries the best of traditional British craftsmanship with striking colours  and textures, resulting in unique selection of carpets that stand out for all the right reasons.

Brockway adds new colours to best selling ranges

Some of Brockway Carpets’ most popular ranges are getting a makeover for the summer, responding to the trend towards stronger fashion-led colours and giving retailers the opportunity for more sales.

The best selling Amore and Florian ranges are all being updated with seven new colours for Amore and ten for Florian. The new shades range from greys and striking amethyst purples to jade and sea greens, and the company believes they will add an extra boost to the popular selling lines.

In addition, Brockway is launching two chic new loop pile carpets, offering ageless elegance that will appeal to a wide range of homeowners. Verona and Modena are named after classical Italian cities and offer a selection of five and seven natural colours respectively. These range from deep mocha and truffle to fragrant creams with a stylish spectrum of shades in between. Modena is a contemporary textured carpet with Verona offering softness and luxury with a looser loop pile. Both are manufactured in 100% wool, 3ply yarn with Verona available in 4m and Modena in 4m and 5m widths.

Go on you Badgers

Brockway Badgers, our tireless football team comprising of staff members who really should know better, have narrowly failed to avenge their previous 3-1 defeat in the annual charity match with Victoria Villians, their opponents from Victoria Carpets, our Kidderminster Competitors.

Team Spokesman Darren Rollings who, when not playing football, handles quality control for Brockway, told us before the match that he and his fellow crew of physical, muscular and toned athletes were positively raring to go on March 7th. “We’ve been training every week and we’re sure to win this time,” he said confidently. Unfortunately, this didn’t translate onto the pitch and the Badgers suffered a very unlucky 1-0 defeat.

The Team is hoping to top last year’s sum of more than ?1,070 which was raised for Kidderminster’s local cancer care unit, the Millbrook Suite. This year’s match will be donating its fundraising efforts to the County Air Ambulance, another very worthy cause.

Good luck next time, Badgers!

Two families, two generations as Brockway founder celebrates his 80th birthday

Brockway Carpets founder Roy Annable marks his 80th birthday today (28th January) with celebrations at the Kidderminster firm he began with colleague Skene Walley in 1964.

Its also a celebration of family ties, as both Roy and Skene’s sons now play pivotal roles in the firm – with Roy’s son Charles now Brockway’s Managing Director and Skene’s son Nick as Production Director.

The company began life in 1964, when Roy and Skene took over A G Brockway, a small Axminster and Wilton carpet manufacturer in Kidderminster which had been going since the 1930s and whose owner was retiring. The first few months were hand to mouth with no guarantee that there would be enough money to pay next week’s wages. Roy was out on the road all week getting the orders and when he returned to the factory with them in his pocket, Skene would literally get weaving. Soon they found their feet and sales started to climb.

Charles joined the company in 1993 and Nick became production director in 2002 – although his first job at Brockway was weeding the car park in his school holidays! These days the company has moved from its original site at Hoobrook to offices in Spennells Valley Road but the values that Roy Annable instilled in the company 44 years ago still hold firm, according to his son:

“We’re still very much a family firm with more than half our staff having been with us for over five years,” says Charles. “We’re proud of our roots in Kidderminster and the role we have in the local economy. We concentrate on producing high quality products that are sought after in the UK and beyond, and take great pride in using sustainable raw materials which support traditional ways of life in communities like the Lake District and the Shetland Isles.

“We’re delighted to be able to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday and acknowledge the huge debt that Brockway Carpets owes to him and to Skene Walley; and look forward to the next big milestone – our 50 year anniversary in six years time!”

Carpets take the floor once more with Brockway’s stylish Vogue

It’s official: luscious, colourful carpets are back in vogue.

Across the UK, floors can look forward to the red carpet treatment as more and more people ditch their minimalist 90s-style floorboards and treat their homes to rolls of sumptuous, luxuriously soft carpet.

Right on trend, Brockway Carpets is celebrating the return of colour with the launch of Vogue, a revolutionary co-ordinated collection that will bring out the inner interior designer in even the most ‘play-safe’ of homeowners.

The eye-catching carpets reflect the latest global fashion and interiors trends and feature contemporary colours including eggshell blue, cherry red and burnt orange. They are available in four co-ordinating colour palettes, each of which includes five plain carpets and a sixth featuring variegated stripes of these five colours.

The colours in each palette are designed to work together, allowing stylish home improvers to co-ordinate their carpets right throughout the home, should they wish.

The Vogue collection has been developed in conjunction with internationally-renowned colour trend forecaster Joanna Ramsden from Wools of New Zealand and is based on its 2009 colour palette.

“Vogue takes the guesswork out of interior design, allowing you to start a design scheme from the floor up and plan wall coverings and paint to co-ordinate with the carpets,” explains Joanna.

“Its simple and cost-effective to re-paint or re-paper the walls every few years without having to change the carpets, too.”

According to Joanna, Brockway’s new baby is a pioneering development in the UK carpet market. She monitors interiors trends on a worldwide basis and has never seen this co-ordinated approach before in the UK.

“Colour palettes have been tried in the US carpet industry but the UK is still hooked on neutrals. That’s why this is such an exciting development.”

With an extensive collection of neutral carpets on offer too, Vogue is a departure from Brockway’s traditional ranges, as Managing Director, Charles Annable admits.

“We’re hoping Vogue will appeal to people who wouldn’t normally choose carpets at all,” he says, “people who, for example, would normally go for wooden or laminate flooring and push all their colour onto the walls or soft furnishings.”

“With Vogue, you can choose your palette and apply it confidently in small rooms, large rooms, hallways and stairs and know without doubt that it will all look fabulous.”

The complete Vogue range is available in a high quality 50oz 2-ply yarn in 80% wool/20% nylon. The plain colours are available in 4 and 5 metre widths with the striped carpet available in 4 metre width and also as a 26′ runner for stairs and hallways.

Anticipated retail prices are around ?36 per sq metre and ?45 per sq metre for the runner.

MADE IN BRITAIN

A family run business, we believe strongly in British craftsmanship. Embedded in our workforce is the expertise of generations of carpet makers: many of today’s Brockway employees are the sons and daughters of previous staff, and the skilled recipients of knowledge and experience passed down through the years.

AN EYE FOR QUALITY

Because we manufacture in our own factory, we have much more control and influence over the choice of raw materials and designs that make up a Brockway carpet. We work with industry leading designers and colourists to stay one step ahead of consumer preferences, and conduct regular research with spinners, yarn suppliers and our retailers to monitor trends. We work closely with machine manufacturers and invest on a regular basis in technology which will help us create a better product, more efficiently.

THE PERFECT FINISH

Our staff all take an immense pride in the role they play in the creation of a Brockway carpet. Nothing escapes the eagle eyes of our highly trained production personnel and quality control staff, and all carpets are hand-finished once they leave the machine to make sure that they reach the high standard of quality required for a Brockway carpet.

NATURAL UNDERFOOT

As a responsible, family business, care for the environment and traditional industries is important to Brockway. Wool is used in all of our carpets: it’s a 100% natural product and by using it we help support long-established farming communities and a unique way of life in areas of the UK and beyond. Lakeland Herdwick, for example, uses wool from the prized Herdwick flocks grazing the higher reaches of the Lake District, helping to support a sustainable future for the region’s hill farmers. For our Shetland range, we buy yarn from the only official supplier of Shetland Wool who deals directly with the Islands’ crofters, buying 95% of their total product.

A STAKE IN THE FUTURE

Brockway is a highly innovative company and we focus on developing production methods that are more sustainable and create less waste. Our Envirobac system replaces conventional latex backing with polymer granules, and our whole manufacturing process is effluent free with no harmful emissions and much less impact on the environment. We’re keen to seek out secondary markets for our waste products: our carpet edge trimmings are used in mattress manufacture, and we’re working with Carpet Recycling UK to turn the carpet dust created by our shearer into agricultural fertiliser. Reducing waste isn’t only good for our business; it’s better for future generations, too.
