Karndean: the luxury flooring specialists

In 1973, Karndean started life as a small family business. Now we are one of the world’s most renowned and respected luxury flooring companies. To this day we remain family owned – allowing us to stay true to our roots and utterly focused on our customers.

Karndean has certainly come a very long way, and as we’ve grown we’ve always stuck to our core values. Our passion is for developing imaginative, innovative products – versatile, luxury vinyl flooring with the look of simply beautiful, natural floors.

The Good Housekeeping ‘Tried, Tested, Trusted’ experts are busy testing products within the facility and the doors have opened to the public as a demonstration kitchen.  You can experience in person the renowned triple tested recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Estate Agents and magazines tell us all the time that the entrance hallway is where we make our first impression on guests and visitors. If this is the case, let’s make their impression a good one!

With Karndean Designflooring you can go for the simplicity of classic wood and stone designs, as well as personalising your space even further by adding design strips, borders, bespoke features and unusual laying patterns. Stone might not be the obvious choice for a bedroom, but in the image above you can see how our light Opus stone works really well in a bedroom space. Wood or stone look, all of our floors are warm and comfortable on your feet meaning you can go with your favourite design and style without having to worry about practicality.

Children are happy to play anywhere in the family home and being a parent who spends time cleaning up after them, you’ll know that it’s best to contain the disruption to a certain area. If you don’t have a spare room to create a playroom, part of your living room or dining room can double up as a play area.

Our floors are slip-resistant, won’t splinter and are much warmer underfoot than natural wood and stone, and so offer a safer and more comfortable space for kids to play on. If you’re looking for a flooring option for a bedroom or playroom upstairs, the acoustic properties of Karndean LooseLay will help reduce any noise created by little ones running around in the rooms below.

Available in a wide range of designs and styles to help create the perfect backdrop for nurseries, bedrooms and playrooms, there’s sure to be a design to suit your kid’s room.

A home office can be a dedicated space or a multi-purpose room that provides functionality for a number of uses. Whether it’s a hideaway desk or a dedicated room, a working home office should be relaxed and inspiring.

With a choice of wood, stone or iconic flooring, all of our floors are warm underfoot so you can work in comfort all year round.

Karndean floors are made for busy environments. They can handle the weight of appliances and withstand the rigours of the washing, wellies, football boots and pets.

Besides being tough, our floors are also easy to keep clean and guaranteed to last for years. Order samples, test out floors with Floorstyle and visit our showroom or your local retailer to start planning your functional and stylish utility space today.

Traditionally, conservatories were built to make the most of the sun, either as a place to sit and read, or a place to house exotic plants. Nowadays, these spaces offer much more to a home as an extension to your living space year round.

You might use yours as a playroom, a dining room or a family room. Whatever it’s purpose, you will need a floor that is both practical and stylish. Our range of over 150 floors can offer you a wide choice of wood, tile and textured finishes.

Living in the city can sometimes be stressful and the last thing you need is a floor that’s high maintenance. One of the great things about Karndean is that is it easy to look after and will continue to look good for years to come.

Whether you want to create a warm, cosy retreat away from the hustle and bustle or keep things minimalist you are sure to find a floor you suit your space and needs.

Karndean Designflooring brings the uncomplicated beauty of nature to your home.

Simple to maintain and keep clean, too, with a quick wipe of a damp cloth and Karndean routine cleaner. Simple!

Karndean is perfect for the rough and tumble of the family home. Spills of food, drink (and worse!) can be cleaned up in no time.

Because it’s guaranteed to keep looking good for up to 20 years, rooms are versatile and can be changed around in style and use as the family grows up.

You don’t have to live in the country to enjoy country lifestyle or own a pair of wellies to like a more rustic look in your home (although you probably do!).

Karndean brings the country style indoors, with flooring designs all based on our love of nature.

Home is such an important place. It’s where you start and end each day.

If you are just beginning, moving on, making a fresh start, or downsizing, this is the perfect opportunity to create something fresh, original and personal.

To achieve a trendy contemporary Scandinavian look in your home, go for lighter flooring options. The choppy bleached blonde tones of our Knight Tile Pale Limed Oak, Opus Niveus and Knight Tile Lime Washed Oak are all great choices.

Pair your floors with neutral walls, sleek Scandi-style furniture, statement pieces and pops of playful colour to get the look just right.

White can be incorporated into a room using different shades and layering textures, resulting in a space that’s warm and comforting.

Start with a white base and bring in as much or as little colour as you’d like, whenever you’d like. Choose a mixture of more traditional and iconic pieces combining white and cream tones with light natural woods. Build up textures and interest using various shades of white and a mixture of materials.

A great example of this trend in practice is the room set for our White Painted Oak Knight Tile flooring. With an eclectic mix of vintage and classic pieces, like the iconic Eames rocker and ornate mirror, this room has a very relaxed and lived-in modern country feel.

Stuck between a classic and modern feel? Get mixing the two and create a classic modern living space.

It’s the use of colour that really pulls this look together. Choose bold, colourful accessories, paired with neutral white walls adorned with colourful prints. Clean-lined furniture, such as a simple coffee table and neutral coloured sofa, will enhance this modern look.

This style can also be achieved by mixing classic, statement pieces against more contemporary pieces. For example, our traditional Da Vinci Florence Mid Oak planks paired with a large modern canvas painting and statement pieces of furniture.

The key to a modern rustic space is an open floor plan, with a choice of modern furnishings which complement the architectural details of your home.

One of the key components to a modern rustic look is bringing the quality of natural materials, such as wood and stone, inside the home.

Our Karndean LooseLay Hartford plank makes a statement while providing a strong, rustic finish, with its weathered visuals and bold character. For the look of reclaimed wood our Karndean LooseLay Stamford wood effect plank boasts rich brown grain details in contrast with light sandy tones. Both wood effect designs bring an air of distinguished, rustic charm to even the most modern of spaces.

Look to the minimalism of the sixties and seventies for living areas, whilst staying ultramodern in the kitchen and dining areas.

Modern homes should always be open and full of as much natural light as possible – where feasible make windows a trademark feature.

Check out our design team’s top tips and tricks below:
Colour – Approach your colour scheme with confidence and look to introduce ethnic, earthy tones such as sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange and deep shades of red.

Designflooring – Here’s where we’ve added the modern twist to complete this look, with an alternative take on a classic Parquet floor. This eye catching block design is achieved by laying three horizontal pieces against three vertical pieces in a continuous pattern. The golden tones, detailed graining and gentle textures of Auburn Oak Parquet from our popular Art Select collection complements this space perfectly.

How to bring a little 80’s style into your home
Like with the 1970’s, we’re putting a modern twist on the 80’s look.
In the 80?s, a modern look often reflected the ‘less is more’ approach, with minimalist spaces showcasing clean-lined furniture. Dusty neutrals were a popular unifying hue, against soft pastel colours, while statement, chintz reinforced a stark, modern look.

cn-karndean-5

Check out our design team’s top tips and tricks below:
Colour – Look to soft, clean and muted colours for your walls with colours reminiscent of cut timber- warm, gentle shades that are easy to live with and relaxing.

cn-karndean-6

Designflooring – Look to the fifth wall (the floor, of course) to add a rustic and modern edge to your 1980?s theme. With its striking colour variations of dusty pale browns and hints of softer golden hues, our Knight Tile Mid Limed Oak looks great with both eclectic vintage and more traditional interior styles.

Inject 90’s tech style into your home
As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, we’ve been taking you through the decades recreating a 70’s retro and 80’s modern style. This month, we’ll be showing you how to bring back the 90’s.

Being the age of the World Wide Web and new technology, it’s no wonder the colours of this era were dominated by statement greys, blues and greens. What’s more, shiny metallics were used to accent just about everything.

If you’re looking to reinvent your space, why not get inspired with our 90’s look?

cn-karndean-8

Check out our design team’s top tips and tricks below:
Colour – Look to add strong and confident splashes of grey, silver, blue and green hues in your space. We’ve opted for scatter cushions against statement Harlequin Linear 15411 wallpaper by Orla Keily with its bold turquoise, chocolate and silver design. A “tech style” textile!

cn-karndean-9

Designflooring – Rather than adding splashes of metallic throughout your room, why not look to the floor to complete your look? Inspired by the metallic found in Italian ceramics, we’ve chosen our Opus Forma SP214 with its striking combination of rust tones mixed with a silvery sheen.

Classic contemporary
As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations we’ve been taking you through the decades recreating 70’s retro, 80’s modern and 90’s tech style looks. This month, we’re showing you how to bring your interior design back to this decade, with a 2000’s classic contemporary style.

Why not take a break from the latest technology and instead look to create a homely and welcoming room for all the family to enjoy? Even those with four legs and (very large!) paws.

cn-karndean-11

Check out our design teams’ top tips and tricks below:
Colour – Pair creamy neutrals with soft grey and mustard tones for a cool and warm mix in your space. Start with a blank canvas and opt for a light-toned neutral wall paint to get you started? What’s more, it will help you maintain natural light for a contemporary feel.

cn-karndean-12

Designflooring – We recommend oak effects, with warm light to mid-brown tones for a neutral and homely backdrop in your space. We’ve chosen our Van Gogh Wellington Oak VGW53T with its distinctive knots and larger scale planks. By laying the planks on a 45 degree angle, we were also able to make the space look much larger whilst still retaining a cosy and welcoming feel.

cn-karndean-13

Karndean Designflooring brings the ageless beauty of natural flooring to your home without the hassle. Floors with all the wondrous individuality of wood grain, the luminosity of marble and the subtle textures of limestone and slate, but much easier to install and look after.

Each plank and tile is carefully designed for authenticity. They don’t look uniform or manufactured, but convey all the great characteristics of natural materials. Colours are defined with variable shades and tones, just as they are in natural wood or stone.

Comfortable and practical, Karndean is softer, warmer to the touch, and easy to clean without the porous qualities of wood and some stones.

This luxury and comfort is not at expense of strength, designflooring is hard wearing. We use the latest technology and the most durable materials to make Karndean Designflooring last. We offer a Lifetime guarantee on our floors providing you with a long lasting investment for your home.

More reasons to choose Designflooring

The floor is the base of your home life. Your choice determines how you want your home to look and how you want to use it.

And you should choose with care. It is easier to change your furniture than the floor, so it is worth spending time on getting the choice right, and investing in quality that lasts.

The Look
To choose Karndean, first of all you have to love the look of natural hard wood or stone floor – whether you love simplicity or more sophisticated effects. There are hundreds of different styles, colours, tones, textures and decorative finishes to choose from.

Practical
Karndean offers all the attractions of wood and stone without any of the drawbacks of these materials.
Karndean floors still need care and attention with maintenance and cleaning being minimal. Cleaning with a mop and Karndean routine cleaner is all that is needed.

Karndean is also ideal for laying over underfloor heating systems.

Tough
Karndean copes beautifully with the rigours of busy commercial and retail environments, so it can handle the toughest domestic situation.

Designflooring is hard wearing, we offer a Lifetime guarantee on all of our products.

In the unlikely event of damage, a Karndean Designflooring plank or tile can be replaced easily.  This is a huge advantage over products supplied on a roll such as carpet, linoleum and sheet vinyl and click together floors such as laminate, as damage means a costly replacement of your whole floor.

How does our flooring compare

Why choose Karndean over other flooring types?

How does Karndean Designflooring compare with other types of flooring such as laminate, carpet, ceramic tiles, real wood and stone?

Karndean v Hardwood

  • Karndean Designflooring gives you the unique grain and knot details, but without the practical difficulties.
  • Real wood flooring products come in varying quality and can expand, warp and shrink in reaction to temperature changes and moisture. Karndean Designflooring maintains its shape throughout its lifetime and is water resistant.
  • In order to keep real wood flooring looking like new it requires frequent maintenance including sanding, staining and lacquering. With Karndean, there’s no sanding, staining or lacquering required – it’s easy to maintain and keep clean.

Karndean v Stone and Ceramic Tiles

  • Natural stone and ceramic flooring can be hard to manage and weight is often a problem, especially if you’re looking to install in a room upstairs. Karndean is much lighter, flexible and easier to install.
  • The cold touch of stone and marble can be a bit off-putting first thing in the morning or in cold weather. Karndean flooring is much warmer underfoot and is also compatible with underfloor heating.
  • Natural stone and ceramic tiles can be slippery when wet. Karndean flooring is fully slip tested and its textured surfaces are suitable for commercial and domestic use, even in areas which get wet, like the bathroom, kitchen, hall or utility room.

Karndean v Carpet

  • Our floors do not harbour dust mites or bacteria – unlike carpets.
  • Karndean is easy and simple to keep clean, especially if you are busy, have children or pets to clean up after.
  • Our residential guarantee covers the lifetime of your floor for up to 35 years.
  • Unlike carpets, Karndean can be laid over underfloor heating systems.
  • In the unlikely event of damage it is possible to replace a plank or tile of Karndean, a huge advantage over carpet which would need to be completely replaced.

Karndean v Laminate and Engineered Wood

  • Laminates and Engineered Woods are known for looking manufactured and unrealistic in comparison to real wood flooring. Karndean’s product designers beautifully replicate the look and feel of real wood products using advanced manufacturing techniques giving you the look of natural timber without the practical difficulties of maintaining wood flooring.
  • Many man made materials, including laminate, can curl or shrink whereas our floors maintain their shape throughout their lifetime.
  • If water gets inside a Laminate or Engineered Hardwood floor, it can cause the top layer of the product to de-laminate and peel making it less suitable for wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Karndean Designflooring is water resistant and perfect to use in any room of your home, including kitchens and bathrooms.

We should point out that Karndean Designflooring does take longer to fit than roll and sheet products such as carpet or linoleum.  However, we believe the advantages outweigh this, and in comparison, it is quicker to lay than many other hard flooring products such as stone and timber.

How To Choose the Perfect Floor

We know choosing a new floor for your home can be a stressful, hair-pulling journey – but it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to guide you through the process from the floor up. To help you narrow down which floor would look best in your space, ask yourself the following questions.

1. Look
What style suits your taste and your home?
View our style section for room ideas or play around with different floors in typical room settings.

2. Space
What is the size and shape of the room? Is the room bright and full of sunlight or darker with fewer windows?
Light floors make a room feel more spacious and can brighten up darker areas of your home, whilst mid-toned materials can add warmth to a space. Order samples and test them out in your room at different times of day to see how the lighting looks against your favourite products.

3. Needs
What do you use the room for?
Have a look at our our room inspiration pages to get a better idea of which of our floors will work best in your home.

4. Materials
Do you prefer the look of wood, stone or something Iconic and different?
When it comes to wood designs, oak is a classic staple, but for something more unusual take a look at elm, hickory, ignea or tigerwood. Our collection of stone look tiles include classics such as marble and limestone.

5. Colour
What colours feature most in your current decor OR what colours will you be incorporating into your newly designed space?
Natural colours are easy to match with furniture and fittings – what’s more, natural designs will keep looking great as your change and update your furnishings over the years.

6. Size
Do you prefer skinny or wide wood planks? Smaller square or large rectangular stone tiles?
The size of your planks or tiles can be used to trick the eye into thinking that spaces are larger or smaller. For example, horizontal lines can draw the eye and make a small space seem longer. If you’re looking to make a small space seem larger, we suggest going for larger and wider scale planks and tiles.

7. The Finishing Touches
Would you like to personalise your floor with design strips, borders or other bespoke features?
By using design strips and borders, you can easily zone your space and highlight architectural features. Or, go for bespoke features to make your home truly unique and original.

8. Practicality
Is the floor for a busy area in your home such as a kitchen or entrance hall? Will there be food and drink spills such as a kitchen or dining room? Water and bubbles in the bathroom?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need a floor that’s durable and easy to care for and keep clean. You can bet they will be able to withstand the everyday hustle and bustle of your home. Our guarantee proves it.

9. Get some samples

Prepare For Your Retailer

There’s lots to think about when planning your new floor. We want you to get the most you can out of a visit to a retailer, so before you go, spend a little time thinking about the following hints and tips.

Take some approximate measurements of your room(s)

You need to know how much flooring you will and this will help the retailer provide you with an initial estimate.

Make a rough sketch of your room shape

Include window and door positions and key items such as kitchen and bath units, fireplaces and built-in furniture.

You could even take photos of your room with your mobile phone. It sometimes much easier if you have a visual reference.

It will help you when thinking about design features such as strips and borders.

Check what’s under your current flooring surface

Make a note of it e.g. wood, concrete, and if it’s fairly flat.

Gather together colour references, wallpaper and paint swatches, wall tile and surface samples

This will help you when looking at the products.

It’s perfectly normal for people to take a cupboard door or a piece of worktop with them.

Make a note of your favourite Karndean floors and finishing touches or print them off

If you already have a favourite its a good idea to have some references with you. That way you can compare any others you like.

Karndean Designflooring and Underfloor Heating

Karndean Designflooring is suitable for installing over under-floor heating systems, providing they have been insulated so that the surface temperature does not exceed 27°C (80°F).

Designflooring is warmer and softer underfoot than stone and ceramic tiles so is a popular choice for bathrooms, kitchens and conservatories.

Karndean can be laid over under-floor heating systems for extra warmth. When visiting your retailer, do remember to discuss under-floor heating when selecting your floor.

If you are arranging for installation of under-floor heating or have an existing system, we recommend making a note of the manufacturer and model. Your Karndean installer will need to ensure that your heating system is compatible with our flooring.

We provide full guidance to our flooring installers about sub floor and adhesive preparation when laying Karndean floors over under-floor heating systems.
