For almost 90 years Mellau Carpets has been manufacturing the highest quality sisal carpets, rugs and runners.
The company only uses the finest certified quality of organic sisal yarn imported from East Africa and being shipped to the factory. Mellau`s main factory is located in the Austrian mountainous region of Vorarlberg and is fully equipped with a spinning shop, dye works, a weaving mill and a coating plant.
Being located high up in the Bregenzerwald Mountains of Vorarlberg in Austria, the company is very aware of its environmental responsibilities. Mellau are strongly committed to minimising the impact of their manufacturing activities on the environment.
Mellau Carpets manufactures sisal flooring to the highest ethical standards only from established plantations in East Africa where the welfare of the workforce is cared for and strive to provide schools and healthcare benefits amongst others. The manufacturing is carried out by an experienced and skilled workforce, in compliance with Eco-Tex® Standard 100 (German: Oeko-Tex®), meaning that all products comply fully with all legal requirements, practice, codes and regulations.
All the sisal used by Mellau is harvested from the leaves of the agave plant in East Africa. Around 50 leaves are cut per plant each year. During the first 4 years, the plant is being cut twice a year. Around 300 leaves may be harvested during the economic life of the agave plant, resulting in a total of 500 to about 600 tons of fibre per hectare.
Mellau Carpets are managing to produce their carpets without any secondary backing, which allows the floor to breathe. This makes the final product ideal for people who suffer from allergies.
Mellau Carpets is committed to constantly improving its environmental performance, and The Flooring Group is proud to have them as a partner. Browse our website to see the range of Mellau Carpets we provide or visit one of our showrooms.
