From our early origins to today’s position as a leading manufacturer of commercial floorcoverings the success story continues…
The Early Years 1915 – 1948
1915 – THE INCORPORATION OF JAMES HALSTEAD LIMITED
The company was founded as a weaving operation by James Halstead, who had previously been a Weaving Shed Manager for another Manchester company.
The original product line was woven cotton textiles, which were both dyed and waterproofed. Later, this was to turn to the production of rubberised fabric used in the manufacture of mackintoshes.
1934 – JAMES HALSTEAD LTD MAKES FIRST FLOORING PRODUCT
James Halstead brought in a machine to friction calender (or roll) rubber onto a teased fabric. It was very durable and did not require salvaging, and was thus ideal for hard-wearing applications. It was sold to Briggs Motor Bodies (later Ford) as carpeting.
1935 – JAMES HALSTEAD DIES
At the comparatively young age of 66, James Halstead died, leaving the company in the hands of his two sons, John and Herbert.
1948 – BELSTAFF JOINS THE JAMES HALSTEAD GROUP OF COMPANIES AND THEY BECOME A PUBLIC COMPANY
The company was floated on the Stock Exchange on 30th April 1948, issuing 10,000 ordinary shares of ten shillings each.
Domestic & International Expansion 1954 – 1978
1954 – THE GROUP EXPANDS ITS FLOORING BUSINESS
A major push behind this fledgling area resulted in fast growth. At about this time, the first installation of Polyflor was carried out by Robert Kerr, a leading Manchester flooring contractor. The group continued to invest heavily in flooring.
1963 – THE GROUP STARTS MANUFACTURING IN SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND
Such was the success of the new products and technology that the group created overseas manufacturing and sales operations that reached right round the world. By the end of the ’60s the international market had changed, and the benefits of single-site product development and manufacture were to result in refocusing on the UK operation, Consequently, the manufacturing operations in Australia and South Africa were closed in 1968 and 1969 respectively, and the manufacturing operation in New Zealand was sold to Skellerup Industries in 1971.
1971 – LAUNCH OF POLYFLOR XL
Polyflor XL was the first single layer homogeneous flooring product to be made available in 2-metre width. This, at the time, was a very significant move, and the product has become one of the most successful ranges in our portfolio.
Also in 1971, Polyflex Plus was launched, and gained substantial business in the housing market.
1972 – LAUNCH OF POLYTRED dB
Polytred dB was the forerunner to today’s Polytred Acoustic. Also in 1972, the start was made to metrication of all product sizes.
1974 – NEW PERIOD OF GROWTH
Following the death of Herbert Halstead, John’s son Geoffrey Halstead took control of the business. Geoffrey had been with the company since 1947.
This heralded a new period of significant growth for Halsteads with Geoffrey at the head of a dynamic team of professional managers.
1976 – POLYFLOR STYLE A LAUNCHED
The launch of Polyflor Style A was the culmination of a link with Bernat Klein. The shades were developed and linked to the Property Services Agency’s interior furnishings scheme.

1996 – GERMAN DISTRIBUTOR OBJECTFLOR IS PURCHASED
The Objectflor business was purchased in order to facilitate further investment in – and therefore development of – the German market. This has now advanced such that the sales and warehousing facility in Cologne is responsible for all the Central European markets.
1998 – PUR REINFORCEMENT ADDED TO NON-DIRECTIONALS
Building on the success of the non-directional products launched in 1989, a polyurethane reinforcement was added to the products, providing excellent protection and facilitating a polish-free maintenance regime. Subsequently, the PUR reinforcement was added to the 2000 range and also features on Forest FX.

Polyflor celebrates 100 years of manufacturing in Manchester
Polyflor, the UK’s commercial and residential vinyl flooring specialist, is celebrating a century of manufacturing in Manchester, UK, where this family-run company was born and is still flourishing as a global business.
Over the last 100 years the expansion of Polyflor’s parent company James Halstead PLC has been managed by four generations of the Halstead’s own dynasty of entrepreneurs in Bury, Greater Manchester. Established by James Halstead himself in 1915, the company’s original trade was the waxing and showerproofing of cloth for raincoats, before expanding into flooring in 1934.
After chemist Bill Roberts experimented with PVC to create a practical and resilient floorcovering at their Whitefield factory, “Poly-Flor” vinyl flooring was launched in 1954 when a 24 year old Geoffrey Halstead, the group’s current Executive Chairman, started up his sales operation. After persuading many contractors to move from promoting and installing existing linoleum products to working with more advanced “Poly-Flor” vinyl flooring, this investment in the market paid off as vinyl flooring soon became the company’s most profitable product.
Since pioneering the development of homogeneous vinyl flooring in 1950s, Polyflor has become a market leader for commercial vinyl floorcoverings with significant market share around the world. Now Polyflor manufactures a wide range of high quality and high performance flooring products, from safety flooring to luxury vinyl, which can be installed in homes, offices, hospitals, schools and retail interiors amongst others.
James Halstead PLC figures reported a turnover of ?223.5 million and pre-tax profit of ?41.9 million for the financial year ending June 2014.
Polyflor is a major employer in Manchester, employing approximately 500 people across its original manufacturing site in Whitefield, Bury and its sales and marketing office in Royton, Oldham. In 2010 Polyflor also acquired a new heterogeneous sheet manufacturing site in Teesside, North East England. Now a well-established global organisation which is going from strength to strength, Polyflor has international subsidiaries across the world including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Ireland, Norway and most recently India, Canada and the Middle East.
Executive Chairman Geoffrey Halstead commented, “After James Halstead Ltd was started in 1915 with just three employees and four machines in our factory, we’ve come an awfully long way but are still close to our roots in Manchester. We’re proud to be a UK manufacturer and to have the Polyflor brand known globally as one of the leaders in the flooring industry who are “Covering The World” as our slogan says.”
Polyflor safety flooring brings slip resistance to dementia-friendly ward at Manor Hospital
Polysafe safety flooring was recently installed throughout Ward 29, a £2.5 million new dementia friendly facility developed at Manor Hospital in Walsall, West Midlands.
Stockport based construction and engineering company MTX Contracts Ltd were asked to design, manufacture and construct Ward 29, a 1491m? modular construction made up of 31 modules which were built and fitted out off site before being lifted into position at the hospital by a 350 tonne crane. Installed by John Abbott Flooring of Oldham, Polyflor flooring was used throughout Manor Hospital’s new 30 bed dementia friendly facility which features a reception area, consulting rooms, patient sitting room, six single bed rooms and six four bed rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
Polysafe Wood fx PUR, Hydro and Vogue Ultra PUR safety flooring was used throughout the ward to help keep patients, staff and visitors safe and reduce the risk of slips and falls. All Polysafe flooring ranges feature safety particles for increased traction underfoot, providing sustainable wet slip resistance throughout the guaranteed lifetime of the product.
Steven Hartley, Associate Director at MTX Contracts Ltd commented, “Polyflor’s safety flooring is the ideal combination of high design and high performance. This has allowed us to create a safe healthcare facility for Manor Hospital that is less clinical and more welcoming, creating a more positive environment for patients and staff alike.”
The interior of Ward 29 was designed with the needs of patients living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in mind, with patient areas colour coordinated to aid orientation. As a UK manufacturer of flooring that is suitable for dementia care facilities, Polyflor has recently become a member of the Dementia Action Alliance who are committed to transforming the lives of the 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Polyflor is also a partner of the International Dementia Design Network at the University of Salford and Polyflor staff recently attended an informative Dementia Friends session.

The Wood fx collection features 10 authentic looking wood effect designs which are enhanced by the exclusive Polysafe PUR polyurethane reinforcement for superior cleaning benefits.
Polysafe Hydro and Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR vinyl safety flooring in the Oystershell shades were chosen for the en-suite bathrooms. The installed Cookie Cream shade features virtually invisible safety particles and tonal decorative chips to give the look of smooth vinyl with the performance of a safety floor.
Keith Clarkson, Site Manager at RSPB Bempton Cliffs nature reserve commented, “As this is one of the best locations in the UK to watch seabirds we’ve had over 40,000 visitors since we reopened the centre in April. We needed a floor that was hardwearing and easy to clean yet beautiful to look at. The finished floor is just what we wanted and we’ve had fantastic comments from the public about the refurbishment.”

Polyflor creates a bespoke Expona Flow design for Preston nursery
Polyflor’s new Expona Flow range of high performance commercial flooring was used to create a fun and functional flooring design at Quwwat Islam Education Centre in Preston recently.
Installed by Diamond Flooring of Bolton, seven designs from the Expona Flow range were selected to create the bespoke floor in the corridor of the centre’s Little Sparkles Nursery. The grey Luna and Storm colours were chosen for the base and border of the design floor, whilst the circular designs with striped, spotted and swirl patterns inside were created using the brighter Burnt Orange, Flaxen, Steel Blue, Meadow and Plum shades.
The Expona Flow range features 50 heavy commercial sheet vinyl flooring designs in a 2 metre wide sheet format with a 2mm gauge and a 0.7mm wear layer. The designs used in this nursery corridor are from the Cosmos collection of solid colour, smooth floorcoverings within the Expona Flow range. Subtle highlights created by pearlescent fragments within these designs give the floor added depth and movement that changes with the light in the room.
Quwwat Education Centre worked with Polyflor’s in house Design Service to create this custom floor design. Polyflor’s experienced team works frequently with customers to create stunning bespoke design floors for interior projects in education environments. By using water jet cutting technology, our Design Service can create logos, motifs and intricate images using Polyflor’s high performance flooring.
Polyflor’s Camaro luxury vinyl tiles in White Limed Oak were also installed inside the nursery playroom for two to five year olds. As well as offering years of durability and performance in the home, our hardwearing Camaro collection can also be used for light commercial applications such as this nursery, small offices and boutiques.
Moulana Khalid Ibrahim, Head Teacher at the Quwwat Education Centre commented, “We’re really impressed with the finished result, the flooring looks fantastic and has really brightened up the space for summer. We’ve been getting excellent feedback from parents, pupils and staff.”
Eye-catching Expona flooring helps tattoo studio stand out from the crowd
A bold and dramatic flooring design from Polyflor’s Expona Commercial range of luxury vinyl tiles was chosen for the refurbishment of Vida Loca Tattoo studio in Bolton, Greater Manchester recently.
Vida Loca Tattoo in Bolton town centre includes a tattoo studio, hair salon, piercing studio and a coffee shop all under one roof. The owners chose the Dark Recycled Wood design from Expona Commercial PUR range to fit in with the studio’s contemporary style. To give the look of a random patchwork of upcycled timber, the design includes tiles in three different widths and in various complementary shades creating the effect of a reclaimed wood floor, a look that is becoming increasingly popular.
Danny Watson, owner of Vida Loca Tattoo commented, “We loved this eye catching design so much that we used it all the way through the shop. It really makes our store interior stand out next to other shops on the high street and we’ve had many customers complement us on it. The fact that it is easy to clean and maintain is also a big bonus for us.”
Polyflor helps freshen up Halton Hospital’s new urgent care centre
Polyflor’s vinyl flooring has helped create a fresh, clean and welcoming environment at a new urgent care centre at Halton Hospital in Runcorn recently.
Polyflor’s Pearlazzo PUR highly durable sheet vinyl flooring and Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring were installed throughout the facility by flooring contractors Jepsons Limited of Darwen, Lancashire. This facility was originally a minor injuries department with an out of hours GP’s surgery attached but thanks to the refurbishment it has been transformed by main contractors JMBC Ltd into an urgent care centre which opened in February 2015. The centre expects to attract an increased number of patients, from the 40 per day it saw as the previous minor injuries unit to up to 120 per day as a successful urgent care centre.
Pearlazzo PUR sheet vinyl flooring in complementary fresh shades of Lemon Ice 9702 and Mint Crisp 9706 were used in corridors, nursing stations, reception areas and waiting rooms at Halton Hospital. Available in 24 contemporary shades including neutrals, pastels and brights, the Pearlazzo PUR homogeneous flooring range is popular for healthcare environments due to its UV cured and cross-linked polyurethane PUR coating which allows for an easier cleaning and polish-free maintenance regime.
As a contrast to the pastel tones used in corridors and circulation areas within the hospital, Polysafe Wood fx PUR safety flooring in Warm Beech 3297 was fitted in the treatment rooms. With an attractive wood effect design and virtually invisible safety particles within the vinyl, the Wood fx range was an ideal choice for creating inviting, non-clinical spaces with the added benefit of sustainable wet slip resistance, particularly around sinks and areas of potential spillage.
Lee Bushell, Building Surveyor at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust commented, “Overall Polyflor’s flooring helps create a clean and bright atmosphere where we deliberately used a combination of colours and designs as way finding aids for patients with dementia or those who are partially sighted. The corridor and circulation areas being one colour helps people find their way around the facility and the contrast of the wood effect floor in the treatment rooms helps the patient recognise that they are entering a different area.”

The Secura range of luxury vinyl sheet flooring beautifully replicates the look of natural materials, with this chosen design featuring an inbuilt herringbone pattern and authentically reproduced wood grain and knots to give a rustic feel in a practical loose lay format. The cross linked and UV cured polyurethane reinforcement PUR provides an easy to clean surface and prevents stains and scuff marks, reducing cleaning time and costs.
High performance, decorative Polysafe safety flooring was fitted in the bathrooms to provide sustainable slip resistance in these frequently wet areas. Polysafe Wood fx PUR in authentic Rustic Oak 3337 was installed in the ground floor apartment bathrooms whilst Polysafe Wood fx Acoustix PUR, which features an integrated closed cell foam backing for improved acoustic performance (impact sound reduction levels of 19dB), was used in the upper floor apartments. These wood effect designs feature virtually imperceptible safety aggregates for slip resistance guaranteed to last the lifetime of the product.
Polysafe Hydro Evolve in Indus 4251 with its raised emboss for sustainable wet slip resistance in barefoot areas was also installed in some of the ground floor bathrooms where a walk in shower suitable for disabled use have been fitted.
Johann Horton, Development Officer at Wales & West Housing commented: “We are delighted with the finished flooring at New Road Court, as are the residents who have now moved in.
