World leader in producing and distributing floor and wall covering

Amorim Revestimentos, the worldwide market leader of cork flooring, places nature on the starting point for a better future, investigating and creating flooring solutions that, without affecting the environment, ensure a higher quality of life.

Being present in more than 55 countries, Amorim Revestimentos’ International flooring portfolio and brands, are known throughout the world as pioneers in creating top-quality, ground-breaking solutions.

Wicanders®, Amorim Revestimentos’ premium brand, has been producing flooring since 1868, always inspired on nature’s most pure values and using avant-garde technologies to provide high quality, ecologic and stylish flooring.

Wicanders is recognized as a leader because of the quality, innovation and unique characteristics of their solutions for interior decoration (technical performance, design and comfort). The coverings produced in this Business Unit constitute a unique sales proposition in themselves:

  • easily and rapidly installed (namely non-glued products with the corkloc tongue and groove system);
  • environmentally friendly – made out of natural products, they favour energy saving (insulating capacity, heat retention);
  • healthy – surface finishes do not retain dirt, therefore they do not favour the proliferation of germs and fungi;
  • sound resistant – they reduce the transmission of sound between and inside compartments (impact noise and step noise, respectively);
  • they provide natural thermal insulation, as well as a high capacity to retain thermal energy, thanks to the incorporation of cork;
  • comfortable – the cork incorporated into them deadens impact and relieves tension;
  • durable and easy to maintain but low impact on the environment;
  • re-usable (in tongue and groove system) or recyclable.

Wicanders profitable and sustained growth is based on three fundamental vectors: the products, the Clients and the distribution channels. Emphasis is on the correct weighting of each of the vectors, in such a way as to optimize commercialization margins

Wicanders® Towards Sustainable Development

Wicanders® is a truly sustainable brand! Produced by Amorim, it represents a unique balance between the creation of wealth and the protection of the environment. The starting point is a raw material that is extracted cyclically from the cork oak trees without ever damaging them. This raw material is then transformed into high value-added products while promoting the economic and social sustainability of areas at risk of desertification.

Several eco-efficiency studies, based on a comparative analysis with several other types of flooring, illustrate the excellent environmental performance of Wicanders® products and its manufacturing process. Besides the smaller amounts of energy and raw materials required for the manufacturing process, these products actively contribute to reducing global warming, not only through their low emissions, but also due to cork’s natural property of retaining CO2. It is estimated that the Portuguese cork oak forest – montado – is responsible for retaining 5% of the country’s annual CO2 emission, representing 4.8 million tons per year.

Wicanders’s cork products are uniquely balanced between the creation of wealth and the protection of the environment.

We fully support the matters about the environment and sustainability, which are two of the most important values concerning the certifications, which give us credibility around every market.

The markets globalization makes itself much more pressure in quality issues. In fact most of our trading partners do not admit failures.

On the other hand the quality is already an operating philosophy in modern and competitive business, becoming more and more a matter of access to the most demanding markets.

Cork – A truly nature’s miracle!

Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. It is removed from the trunk by hand without ever damaging the tree. Every year a new bark grows making it a renewable and sustainable resource. Cork is ideal in terms of the ever increasing demand for conservation of natural resources.

The exclusive natural qualities of cork make it ideal to use in flooring as it reduces sound, provides an optimal floor temperature throughout the year and is comfortable to walk on. It has unique and incomparable qualities which no ingenious human has yet managed to copy or improve.

Cork is made of 40 millions cells per cm3 resembling a “honeycomb structure” which protects the tree from weather temperatures sharp changes. Each cell functions as a miniature natural thermal insulator and also provides above standard sound insulation and shock absorber properties.

The importance of Cork Oak

The Cork Oak (Quercus Suber L.) is a tree belonging to the Oak family from which Cork is extracted. Its value is based not only on the products extracted from the tree, but on all of the agricultural, forest, pastoral and hunting activities that revolve around the cultivation of the Cork Oak.

Regular extraction of the Cork (a process called stripping) is a fundamental contribution for environmental, economic and social sustainability in the rural areas of the Mediterranean region where the Cork Oak may be found.

The Cork tree is a slow growing tree, which may live for 200 years, which allows it, on average, to be stripped 16 times during its lifetime. The first extraction of cork from the Cork Oak tree occurs only 25 years after planting, following which it is harvested in 9 year cycles, without ever damaging the tree in any way. This method allows the cork oak forest to fulfill its role of fixing CO2, thus actively contributing to reduce global warming.

The Cork forest in Portugal (700.000 hectares), known as “Montado”, is a typical Iberian Landscape which is key in supporting a natural bio-diversity, including some of the most endangered species in the world: Iberian Lynxes, Imperial Eagles’, Black Storks and Wolves.

Due to its remarkable properties raw cork was initially used to make cork stoppers and after that, in floor and wall coverings as well as insulation. As the result of a significant investment in R&D and innovation, cork is now used in high-tech applications, including automotive industry, in the dams and airports construction. The aeronautical sector is using cork as thermal insulation material in space shuttles. Cork has also been used for covering iconic buildings, for design objects, for contemporary furnishings and as an original material for fashion accessories.

The exclusive natural qualities of cork make it ideal to use in flooring as it reduces sound, provides an optimal floor temperature throughout the year and is comfortable to walk on. By combing the most recent technology with traditional production methods, cork is incorporated into sophisticated wall and floor coverings in a wide range of textures and colours. These products are a unique blend of high technical performance, design and comfort.

Lisbon Fashion Week with cork design and Wicanders coverings

Three types of cork will be used in Patio da Gale’s set design

Thanks to a partnership with Corticeira Amorim, the runway shows at ModaLisboa | Lisbon Fashion Week from 7 to 9 March at Patio da Gale will take place on a Wicanders cork floored catwalk. Cork will thus occupy the main stage of the event and, as a result, a natural and comfortable material will be offering significant acoustical benefits while also providing a distinctive aesthetic to the catwalk.

Cork will be used as the main element of the set and interior design of the event designed by architects Rita Muralha and Raul Santos. Cork will not, however, be used only in the floor. Similarly to what was done at the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, the darkish-coloured expanded insulation cork board will be widely used as interior wall lining as well as in dedicated indoor furniture.

As a result, a number of different common areas of the event such as the Fashion Parade room, the Club, the Lounge, the Wonderoom and the Backstage will be covered with cork.

According to Eduarda Abbondanza, co-founder and director of Moda Lisboa: “Cork is a national heritage, a very important industry in our economy and an excellent and ecological raw material. ModaLisboa is a communication platform whose mission has always been to promote national fashion design and production capability; cork is associated with fashion in this edition of the Lisbon Fashion Week, offering a plethora of uses.”

In the opinion of Corticeira Amorim’s team, there is a perfect tuning between the profile of ModaLisboa | Lisbon Fashion Week – an event of growing international importance taking place in our country – and the Company’s positioning strategy which – based on a national raw material and supported by a significant investment in innovation – takes Portugal to the four corners of the world.

Carlos de Jesus, Amorim’s marketing and communication Manager said: “After having seen the cork used in similar events in major fashion capitals, it was important for us to associate with a national stage that, in a privileged way, would cause a large audience to become acquainted with a number of sustainable, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing cork solutions.”

Wicanders announces the introduction of phthalate free solution in all its High Performance Surface products

  • Greener and healthier alternative in the current High Performance Surface (HPS) products, maintaining all the properties of a high performance finishing and keeping the durability and longevity of the floor covering
  • Healthier and Environmental friend choice that contributes for an even better indoor air quality
  • Safer plasticizers used in the production of HPS

Wicanders by Amorim Revestimentos, renowned for the continuous development of eco-friendly solutions for cork coverings, announces that from January 2014 onwards all High Performance Surface (HPS) production will be made with phthalate free plasticizers.

Phthalates are substances included in plasticizers that are considered harmful to the health. Therefore Wicanders has decided to make a replacement of current plasticizers in all HPS products – a solution specially developed for areas with heavy traffic such as commercial, business or general public areas – by a new non-phthalate plasticizers generation. With this innovation, Wicanders improves the indoor air quality to even higher standards, keeping all the original features of the product, such as flexibility, transparency and durability.

This new technology will be available in the commercial solutions of Corkcomfort, Woodcomfort and Artcomfort product lines contributing to a greener and healthier alternative, which reinforces Wicanders Environmental responsibility, maintaining all the properties of a high performance finishing.

The removal of these harmful phthalates enables Wicanders to achieve a new standard by combining sustainable concerns with its unique state of the art technology.

  • Corktech label distinguishes Wicanders when compared with other flooring solutions available in the market, expressing the benefits of integrating cork
  • By using a unique engineered multilayer structure, which combines state of the art technology with the exclusive natural properties of cork, a higher standard in flooring was achieved

Now, and in a clear demonstration of its world leadership in cork flooring, Wicanders is launching a new label -Corktech – to highlight in a tangible way the benefits of its particular solution: more silence, more warmth, more walking comfort, more body wellness and more impact resistance.

Cork is a sustainable product that comes from the bark of a tree – a unique species of oak that renews its bark after each harvest – which is composed of 40 million air filled cells per cm3 that provide resilience, sound absorption and thermal insulation. Along with these benefits, Amorim continuously invests in R&D and in new technological solutions, developing new collections and renewed looks. The cork layers play a major role in the performance of the wall and floor coverings, turning them into a unique selling proposition and a key differentiating issue when compared with other solutions available in the market.

Corktech label expresses this exclusive technology combined with one of nature’s most amazing products. Its superior performance is based in a multilayer structure: a high thickness core layer of cork, which provides superior physical comfort, sound reduction and warmth, allied to an integrated cork underlay that reinforces the shock absorbing and the acoustical and thermal insulation properties.

Combining state of the art technology with the exclusive natural properties of cork, Wicanders created the perfect match between beauty, comfort and durability, achieving a higher standard in flooring, with an impressive range of decorative visuals in cork, wood, optical image and vinyl, protected by the upmost resistant top finishes wear layer.

Natural Power Coat – Wicanders launches the Ultimate Resistance for Varnished Cork Floors

Wicanders, renowned for the continuous development of state-of-the-art and eco-friendly solutions for cork covering, presents its most recent innovation, the Natural Power Coat (NPC), an ultimate resistant and ecological varnish for cork floors.

This new coating is available with the product line Wicanders Artcomfort – that blends the natural embossing of cork with the latest optic image technology achieving an authentic and natural surface reproduction – thus revolutionizing the strength and durability of cork floors. NPC is suitable for the most demanding domestic areas and commercial areas with moderate traffic, ensuring an exceptional wear resistance and longevity. For the 1st time, varnished cork floors will achieve a class of use of 32 (ISO 10874), AC6 (EN13329).

Due to NPC chemical reaction during the hot coating process, this highly flexible finishing fits perfectly with the resilient characteristics of cork floor, preserving its ability to “bounce” back from impacts, making it more durable, comfortable and resistant than hard surface floors, like wood or tiles, and maintaining all its unique advantages: thermal insulation, sound reduction and sustainability.

It must be highlighted that this new finishing also fits the expectations of a society that is demanding for natural products and its sensorial benefits, thus ensuring the pleasant haptic natural sensation, and, at the same time, the mate gloss surfaceresembles materials like wood or stone, keeping a high level of detail.

NPC is based on an absolutely solvent free and formaldehyde free polyurethane technology, with no VOCs, formaldehyde, neither monomer emissions, making it an ecological coat. It also put a stop to entrapped dirt, germs or fungus, thus actively contributing to a healthy and hygienic environment.

Given its surprising features, NPC offers a 20-year warranty for domestic use and 10 for commercial use, the highest guarantee granted by a varnished cork product in the market.

In order to better support NPC advantages, tests were carried out by the Development and Examination Laboratory for Wood Technology (EPH), according to EN 13329, and included the most resistant varnished cork printing products of the market.

Wicanders Artcomfort NPC has the best classification in the market in what concerns to Abrasion Resistance and Impact Resistance.

Wicanders Presents the New Label to Highlight the Uniqueness of its Cork Floor and Wall Solutions

  • Cork, a sustainable product, provides a superior performance in thermal insulation, sound reduction, physical comfort and shock absorbing

Over the years, Wicanders has developed floor and wall coverings with exclusive properties, taking advantage of cork intrinsic characteristics. By combining traditional production methods with cutting-edge technology, Wicanders’ floor and wall solutions are distinctive, elegant, resistant and comfortable, using a material with unique qualities and which has proven environmental benefits – cork.

Amorim cork showcased at the Victoria and Albert Museum

Amorim’s partnership with the London Design Festival takes natural cork floor coverings to the Bristish Capital

Corticeira Amorim and FAT – Fashion Architecture Taste, the London-based practice, joined for the first time at the London Design Festival which will run between 14-22 September 2013. Cork from Portugal will be showcased again at a leading international event.

This innovative project, which has just been unveiled in London, was developed from a natural cork floor covering. The final result can be seen on a bridge over the V&A’s Medieval and Renaissance Galleries, the event’s main venue.

During the official opening, Ben Evans, Director at London Design Festival, highlighted: “Amorim is the world’s biggest cork producer and the most interesting. It is why we wanted to partner with them for this project which ambitiously shows what cork is capable of. Working with the V&A and architects FAT has given us the best cork floor I have ever seen.”

With an avant-garde approach to a natural cork floor covering – one of the major products of the industry – the project invites the visitor to discover the visual and tactile properties of cork while challenging existing connotations with the material. Through this project, it is also possible to witness the performance of cork floors in terms of both thermal and acoustical insulation.

Sean Griffiths, an architect and director of FAT, stressed that “it’s been a fascinating experience entering Amorim’s world of cork. It really is a 21st century material which is highly sustainable. Using cork has allowed us to work in a very different way, starting with the material as generator of the concept. Cork has a very natural appearance which is supported by an intricate geometric structure and the main idea of the design is to capture the relationship between these aspects of the material. The design also makes use of the strong visual acoustic and tactile qualities of the material.”

The floor will be made up of a series of cork tiles laid in a repeating trompe l’oeil geometric pattern, which is based on a scientific diagram of the cellular structure of cork. The pattern also accidently recalls certain architectural characteristics of the Douro region of Portugal, where geometric tile patterns are often found.

Antonio Amorim, Chairman and CEO of Corticeira Amorim said: “Amorim’s partnership with the London Design Festival is a unique opportunity to showcase CorkTECH, by Wicanders®, our innovative, design-driven natural cork flooring. Combining FAT’s cutting-edge creativity with cork’s unmatched technical capabilities will deliver an exciting, contemporary perspective on Nature’s most sustainable flooring solution.”

The London Design Festival is an annual event held in September to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world. The involvement of Corticeira Amorim in the event is part of a concerted strategy designed to attract the attention of the international design community to the potential of natural cork used in innovative flooring solutions.

London Design Festival:
The London Design Festival is a key constituent of London’s Autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival. Established in 2003 its role is to celebrate and promote London as the world’s design capital and gateway to the to the International design community.

Last year there were 79 shows and events at the Festival’s central hub at the V&A, while the four Design Districts (including Brompton Design District, Shoreditch Design Triangle, Fitzrovia Now and new London Fields Design District) hosted over 100 events.

The Festival attracted a dedicated – or direct – audience of over 350,000 people, from over 60 countries with a wider audience of over 2m people coming into contact with the major public commissions.

Audiences at the V&A totalled 111,538 for the 10 day period of the festival, which was one of the busiest weeks recorded in the Museum’s history. It is estimated that over 1250 design companies have generated new business as a result of involvement in the Festival for 2012.

The Festival works closely with, and receives financial support directly from, the Mayor’s Office – having transferred support from the London Development Agency. The Festival also receives support from Arts Council England, as a National Portfolio Organisation 2012-15.
