Look Back Before Tackling Your New Project!

London flooring experts explain that it is of utmost importance to consider what products have been used on the building in the past before you undertake a refurbishment project. You should know that building built pre- 1970s were designed in a different way in terms of protection against sub-ground moisture. Back then, there were no design criteria to instruct the use of Damp-proof Membrane (DPM) – in other words, it was possible for moisture to get into London flooring. This greatly differs from DPC (damp-proof course) – it is a material which is used to stop moisture migration up the walls and prevent from rotting and other damages. London flooring professionals point out that the problem is that a DPC is typically visible within the brickwork while DPM can`t be noticed unless a core sample is taken. If you are dealing with rubber resin or acrylic adhesives you should know that they are fine to smooth over. Pressure sensitive adhesives and old tackifier are prone to break down so be careful with them!
  • Before installing your new London flooring solution, better remove black adhesives as they need lower strength smoothing compounds because the adhesives are soft – this can limit your selection of floor coverings. Have in mind that there are also formulations of thermoplastic tiles and black adhesives that incorporated asbestos – consider that before uplifting such products.
  • A reputable flooring company in London says that you should always follow the simple rule of not putting harder higher tension products over low tension products, to prevent any future failures. If you want to leave the smoothing compounds because they are firmly bonded, then look towards to choose a lower strength choosing compounds. There are good options available on the market which will give you more security without the ammonia smell!
