Safety First

Safety flooring has made big advances in recent years:

Altro Unity25newgeneration heavy-duty 2.5mm safety flooring has made its debut at Madejski Stadium, home of Reading Football Club. The flooring has been fitted in the Premier League club’s team changing rooms, main tunnels, referees’ changing rooms, showers and a TV room – 240sq m in total.

Available in 18 plain and chipped colours, Unity features aluminium trioxide and coloured quartz for long lasting slip resistance. At 2.5mm thick, it is described as durable and hard wearing enough for use in areas of high foot traffic with constant dirt. It has PUR technology claimed to reduce cleaning and maintenance costs throughout the product’s life by up to 60%. Enhanced chemical resistance and a bacteriostat for MRSA resistance, reducing infection risk, is also included.

Nik Tong, director of Caversham Flooring Co, which was responsible for the installation, says: ‘The existing flooring was Altro Maxis 25, we laid five years ago. After the club’s return to the Barclays Premier League, they wanted to revitalise the stadium with new flooring and Unity 25 flooring was proposed.

‘The new product is easy to install despite being very thick. We had to take up the old floor, relatex the subfloor with a smoothing compound, then lay the new floor in sections for which we used AltroFix 365 adhesive. The football season had started, so we worked in stages to keep key areas operational during matches.

‘In the tunnel mouth, which opens into the stadium, we laid Reading FC logo within a section of Altro Walkway 25 safety flooring. Altro gave us great service and back-up throughout the installation. The results are great.’ www.altro.com

Gerflor saysitsTarasafesheet safety flooring has deeply inlaid mineral crystal particles to provide value and aesthetic vibrancy, whilst making installation and recycling even easier.

Tarasafe is designed for improved anti-slip performance and high resistance to heavy traffic, unlike traditional safety floors, where carborundum particles cause an inherently dark appearance and make recycling difficult, says Gerflor.

The flooring’s mineral crystal technology reportedly provides a clean and lustrous appearance throughout its entire life, while the mineral crystal is itself a recycled ingredient and 100% of any waste material can also be recycled.

For the installer, Tarasafe is claimed to save both time and money. Blade life is extended by up to five times that of traditional safety flooring because it is easier to cut than traditional carborundum, says Gerflor. The product itself is also said to be lighter to handle and more flexible, ensuring faster installation and an ability to contend with difficult corners and angles.

Gerflor’s SparClean surface treatment is claimed to make Tarasafe one of the easiest safety flooring products to maintain.

SparClean is said to contribute to a 60% reduction in water and detergent usage, when compared with non-treated material. Optimum hygiene is also provided by the integral Sanosol bacteriostatic and fungistatic treatment.

Tarasafe is a multilayer flooring including a PVC wearlayer and glass fibre reinforced grid. Tarasafe has
an abrasion group ‘T’ rating and R10 slip resistance, with the exception of Tarasafe Super
which has improved slip resistancy now with a R12 rating. All the Tarasafe ranges have an
extended 12-year warranty.

M a p e i explains that to secure resilient floorcoverings in areas where standing water or chemicals may settle, the adhesive must be robust enough to retain the bond when they penetrate semi-impervious floorcoverings. For these installations, Mapei offers Adesilex G19 and G20 two-component polyurethane adhesives that will, once cured, reportedly resist levels of water ingress.

For dry surface areas Mapei offers Ultrabond Eco range of adhesives, all accredited with the GEV Emicode EC1 or EC1R, and designed to secure all types of resilient slip-resistant or safety flooring.

n o r a describes its noraplan ultra grip as the first PVC-free safety floorcovering with very low slip potential in both dry and wet conditions.

The product has been tested according to the high requirements of the British TRRL Pendulum test and reportedly has excellent slip resistant properties, 36+ (39) low potential for slip in wet and dry areas – R11 according to DIN 51 130 . noraplan ultra grip is also said to be easy to clean.

Like all nora floorcoverings, it is described as extraordinarily wear resistant, having a long life, dimensional stability, anti-static and with excellent fire protection properties. All nora products are said to be environmentally compatible as they do not contain any PVC, plasticizers (phthalates) or halogens (e.g. chlorine), making them toxicologically safe in the event of a fire.

This new type of safety floor (PVC free) is reportedly already proving itself in many installations worldwide, particularly in schools and universities, industrial sites, hospitals, airports and transportation, sports and leisure facilities. www.nora.com/uk

Plastic Extruders says its Tuff Spun Plus anti-fatigue matting, highlights trip hazards and provides comfort underfoot at Anglo Normandy Aeroengineering in Guernsey.

This aircraft maintenance and repair facility provides services to private and air taxi operators. Due to the large areas of open space meaning longs runs of power and compressor cables, the company had to find a matting for covering them to prevent tripping. This would minimise risks and also provide comfort for technicians standing for long periods on the concrete floor.

The 91cm wide matting is available in 18m long rolls or in the three module sizes of 60 x 91cm, 150 x 91cm and 300 x 91cm. All rolls and modules come with standard sealed bevelled edges to reduce tripping.
