Change For The Better

A variety of flooring materials can be specified for refurbishment:

Ardex hasforover40years produced the Arditex range of latex levelling and smoothing compounds, reportedly offering flooring contractors application and performance benefits to help minimise installation risks.
By reducing the need for intensive preparation, and priming, Arditex NA is designed to save contractors both time and money.

Its established versatility and advanced site tolerance are said to mean a reduction in preparation machinery hire, lost time and expensive call-backs as a result of failures that can be associated with working in

sensitive locations.

Forbo suppliedtextileand resilient products for the refurbishment at LeasePlan UK, Berkshire. Over 5,000sq m of Forbo’s Tessera and Westbond carpet tiles, Allura luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and Eternal project vinyl ranges were installed.

Colour and pattern are integral to the overall design helping to bring vibrancy into the space, so bright and bold furniture products were chosen.

Multi-height loops are said to give Tessera Alignment carpet tiles a bold directional theme, tempered by intersecting random blocks of rich cut pile. A dark nucleus colourway was chosen for the open plan areas, injected with a tangerine accent shade, Sirius, from the Alignment highlight collection.

Westbond, premium quality fusion bonded tiles, were chosen for the reception and executive meeting rooms.
The yarn is fixed directly onto the backing material, resulting in a dense product. For LeasePlan, a bespoke black pepper base was created with a sprinkling of orange ginger to continue the overall feature colour. TesseraHelixcarpettileswere coordinated into the design theme for the stairwell, adding interest with its understated linear design.

When fitted quarter turn or tessellated, Helix tiles can reportedly deliver rich texture and visual appeal to large open floorspaces. Trend colours from Allura LVT range were also chosen with abstract wood designs. Spring Forest stripe was specified for all breakout and kitchen areas.

Meanwhile, the choice for the fourth floor restaurant was Eternal Wood Warm Zebrano due to its durability and maintenance properties.

The project was phased over nine months as staff had to remain in situ without disrupting LeasePlan. Heckmondwike Wellington Velour carpet tiles were selected for the refurbishment of RAF Museum London at Hendon. Manufactured at the company’s Yorkshire site, these tiles were chosen for their hardwearing performance. A petrol blue finish was specified for key areas of the museum, such as surrounding the popular Lancaster Bomber display. Made from 100% polypropylene, the Wellington Velour range will not ravel or fray, according to the manufacturer. Its antistatic and anti-slip qualities suite them to any area where public health & safety is paramount.

Heckmondwike has supplied the museum’s floorcoverings for some time. Previously Wellington Velour broadloom was used extensively throughout the site.

However, the recent refurbishment employed carpet tiles for maximum flexibility and easing the process of replacement should any tiles becoming damaged – a key consideration given the size of some of the pieces housed in the museum, which changes exhibitions periodically.

Brett Roberts of Brent Carpet Company, the installer, said: ‘It was a challenging project with over 600sq m of tiles to be installed while the museum remained open.

Although the museum was happy with the original Heckmondwike carpets, they were due for a refresh after more than 10 years.’ InstaFloorsupplied InstaLay acoustic underlay for use under engineered oak parquet floors as part of a major refurbishment of the Grade II listed Magdalen Chapter Hotel, Exeter.
New Weitzer Parkett wood floors were laid over InstaLay 30hg (3mm high grab) in the bedrooms and spa area. InstaLay reportedly proved more cost effective than the originallyspecifiedunderlay, while providing superior acoustic performance of 23dB for impact sound.

The 1,300sq m of durable cushioned InstaLay reportedly enabled a quick, clean and easy installation as it was loose laid onto the existing subfloor with its recycled rubber crumb composition masking any imperfections.
As the release film was peeled back to reveal its adhesive membrane, the bedrooms’ oak boards and spa’s oak blocks were positioned and pressed into place to ensure high quality parquet wood flooring.

Instarmac products, including those from the Ultra Tile and Ultra Floor brands, were used to fit-out Ceramic Tile Merchants’ new showroom. Horizontal and vertical showroom displays were fixed using Ultra Tile materials, while subfloor preparation was carried out with Ultra Floor products.

The store’s wear surface was created using Ultra Floor Level IT HD top followed by an epoxy paint. Level IT HD top is an industrial grade self-levelling topping said to create an exceptionally strong and level wearing surface. The product can reportedlybepumped, appliedat depths between 5-15mm, is free from protein and ammonia, is shrinkage compensated and polymer modified.

Tiling was completed using two of Ultra Tile’s best-selling adhesives, ProFlex SP and SuperWhite WR Flex. ProFlex SP is a single part product, polymer modified for increased bond strength and enhanced performance.
The cementitious adhesive allows a 40 minute pot life and for grouting to begin after 2.5 hours.
Suited to natural stone and porcelain, it was used on many of thedifferentpods.

SuperWhite WR Flex is the latest addition to the Ultra Tile range of ready mixed wall tile adhesives. Brilliant white in colour, it is described as workable and highly flexible so can be used where vibration is likely. Its increased water resistance combined with anti-fungal technology are said to ensure the adhesive is fully mould resistant.
To grout the stylish pods, Ceramic Tile Merchants used Ultra Tile grout, FlexJoint. Suitable for joint widths from 1- 20mm, FlexJoint is said to be simple to use and formulated to provide a hygienic, mould resistant and water repellent finish. The Ultra Tile grout is available in a choice of colours.

K ä h r s Oak Brighton wood floor was installed at agnès b.’s new concept store in Marylebone High Street. Fitted by shopfitter, DB Solutions, the Kährs specification is part of a complete store refurbishment, featuring rotating art collections alongside agnès b.’s fashions.

The pale-toned wood was chosen to complement the ‘gallery boutique’ design, whilst providing a rustic edge. All product was supplied by Kings Flooring.

Part of Kährs Sand Collection, Oak Brighton is a one-strip floor crafted in Sweden from sustainable, rustic European oak. A white matt lacquer reinforces the tactile ‘beach-chic’ design, whilst providing a durable, easy care surface.

The product’s multi-layered construction is based on the original ‘parquet’ design invented and patented by Kährs in 1941. As well as claiming to provide 75% greater stability than a solid format, the construction method is also said to be most nature- friendly, enabling precise installation without gapping thanks to the company’s glueless Woodloc joint.

M a p e i products for refurbishment include Topcem rapid-drying screed designed to be laid over a polythene membrane and insulation as a floating screed. The product can be laid at 35mm minimum thickness unbonded, it can receive ceramic tiles direct after 24 hours, and will be sufficiently dry to receive moisture sensitive stone or marble after two days and wood and resilient floorcoverings after four days, says

the company.

Mapei also offers Ultraplan Renovation Screed, a fibrous water-mixed flexible multi- purpose levelling compound that can be pump or hand applied at thicknesses between 3-30mm to most substrates including plywood and timber.

Pallmann Pall-XExtreme can reportedly be used as a one or two component wood floor lacquer designed for a broad range of use to satisfy different requirements.

This water-based lacquer is described as fast curing even in the most extreme conditions and suitable for extremely heavy wear areas. As a two-component version (with the hardener component B) it can reportedly be used for high traffic areas, such as shops, restaurants or schools without any problems. In normal to heavy areas the lacquer can be used without the hardener.

The five step training course from Pallmann is designed for people who want to maintain and renovate wooden
floors. The free training sessions give hands-on experience for all aspects of wood floor installation, including the new Pall-X Extreme lacquer.

The sessions are held at Pallmann’s technical forum in Rugby. A two year warranty is offered to everyone attending these courses.

Permaban saysthatits BetaEdge AR concrete floor joint repair system offers a once-and- for-all solution to damaged construction joints in industrial and warehouse floors. It is designed to replace damaged concrete joint arrises. Once installed, the product is designed to protect the construction joint from future damage.
Construction joints are gaps in concrete floors, created when the slab is poured. They allow concrete to move freely as it shrinks, preventing random cracks appearing in the surface.

However, these joints are vulnerable to impact damage when materials handling vehicles pass over. If a joint has no protection built in during the floor’s construction (for example, an armoured joint), it will very rapidly break down once the building is in use, according to Permaban.

Once damaged, a repair is essential to prevent the area worsening. Vehicles can also suffer damage from travelling repeatedly over the uneven surface.

Installing BetaEdge AR is said to be straightforward and cost- effective. The damaged portion of concrete around the joint is simply cut out. The joint repair system is held in place with brackets (supplied with the fixing kit), while the area is filled with repair mortar. Once the mortar has cured, the brackets are removed and the area polished for a smooth, durable finish.

Using a steel repair system reportedly provides a neat finish and durability, as the steel gives firm support to the joint arrises.

BetaEdge AR also has features designed to assist installation. Continuous ‘grid-cut’ concrete ties along the entire length mean that the product can be cut at any point, and still remain securely anchored into the concrete. A sharp edge on the inside top face of the ‘grid-cut’ concrete ties helps ensure a neat finish when trowelling-in.
The joint repair system is made from tough galvanised steel, making it suitable for both internal and external concrete.

Polyflor supplied Agate Grey from Polysafe Modena PUR for a recent refurbishment of the entrance and reception area of the Acute Frailty Clinic, at the Queens Hospital, part of the Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trus,t The Trust required a highly aesthetic flooring with sustainable slip resistant properties. Polysafe Modena PUR was reportedly chosen because of its design appeal whereby safety particles are mainly imperceptible to the eye, combined with the established slip resistant credentials of Polysafe products.

Installed by Multifloor of Cannock, Staffordshire, Modena PUR is said to combine a high- clarity micro-granite decoration with ‘invisible’ slip resistance to reveal the clear aluminium oxide safety aggregates included through the performance layer, And this gives the result of 36+ on the Pendulum wet test to achieve full HSE Compliance.
