Muck Raking

Entrance matting plays a key role in keeping dirt out of building interiors:

Coba Europe has unveiled a selection of competitively priced aluminium systems to its specialist entrance matting range aimed at flooring contractors and specifiers. Known as the ‘plan range’, it offers a choice of primary and secondary matting designs that are custom-made to order. They can be fitted in ‘zoned’ entrance areas with options for indoor and outdoor environments.

The manufacturing technique allows for matting to be produced with a choice of surface finishes and styles to suit each specific location for optimum dirt-barrier performance. There are four main product categories in the ‘plan range’, each with particular features and benefits, all suitable for heavy duty use. Depending on the style selected, there is the opportunity to incorporate logos. An extensive colour palette is offered. For the environmentally-conscious, there are options manufactured from 95% recycled materials. However, the entire Coba plan range has a minimum of 30% recycled content. The new Coba entrance matting brochure is available.

Designer Logo Matting has manufactured graphic inlaid coir and synthetic logo entrance matting for nearly 30 years, supplying big names in retail shops and trade flooring despatching mats worldwide.

Forbo Flooring Systems supplied Nuway Tuftiguard HD and Coral Brush Activ entrance products for Manchester Piccadilly station, which recently underwent an extensive safety upgrade, reportedly one of the single largest contracts of its type in Europe. Forbo’s Nuway Tuftiguard engineered flooring was installed by Master Matting Installations, an approved Forbo Entrance Systems Specialist Installer (FESSI). Sam Webb, director at Master Matting Installations, Halifax, sub-contractors to Amco on this project, comments: ‘The main priority was safety, and so this project required a heavy duty entrance barrier matting system for internal use that would be highly effective at removing and retaining moisture and dirt within the entrance system to prevent any hazardous areas on the interior floor. The heavy and frequent traffic throughout the station, includes wheeled vehicles and heavy suitcases. Another requirement for the flooring, therefore, was the load bearing capabilities and performance, whilst achieving an aesthetically pleasing appearance.’ Nuway Tuftiguard HD classic has a heavy pile double wiper strip and aluminium scraper bar design.

The engineered product is said to be able to cope with the worst of the soil and moisture tracked in on the soles of shoes or wheeled vehicles. Pivotal in protecting people from slips, the highly effective entrance flooring system is the best method of preventing wet and dry soiling from causing serious hazards. The product can also reportedly withstand static loads of up to 900kg/sq cm and has a level surface for ease of movement of wheeled vehicles and luggage. Coral Brush Activ anthracite was also employed. Whilst Nuway was used in the areas with the heaviest footfall, Coral was used in the areas at the side of the entrance where the footfall was less heavy. It provided the most cost effective solution and retained the integrated look of the whole entrance. Forbo offers textile and engineered entrance products intended to work together and with other floorcoverings to create a streamlined appearance throughout the building.

This zoned approach is claimed to provide an effective barrier against footborne dirt and moisture, protecting the rest of the flooring scheme from soiling and damage but, more importantly, reducing the risk of slips and falls.

Heckmondwike FB offers a range of fibre bonded entrance carpets and carpet tiles, with a selection of patterns and colourways and a bespoke logo design service offering specifiers greater scope for creative entrance areas. The company’s range of entrance carpets has been developed as a robust and yet aesthetically pleasing solution, offering a choice of design options in addition to its high-performance capabilities. Designed to prevent the transportation of foot borne dirt and moisture into the building, entrance flooring plays a vital role in interior schemes. Not only can it minimise the risk of slips and falls caused by wet or dirty surfaces, it can also prevent damage to the internal flooring from tracked-in grit or abrasive soil. Abby Chandler, marketing manager from Heckmondwike explains: ‘In today’s economic climate it’s more important than ever to maintain a strong sense of brand identity and bespoke entrance flooring is a fantastic way to emphasise branding messages from the moment a visitor sets foot in the building. ‘Whether incorporating a logo, crest or motto, or simply displaying a welcome message in corporate colours, we are able to create individual entrance designs that match our clients’ specifications.’ Often taking little more than a sketch on a piece of paper as the starting point, Heckmondwike reports being able to recreate designs, logos and motif in any of its entrance area carpet ranges. The finished design can then be inlaid directly into the entrance carpet or finished as a loose lay mat. Said to be a robust construction that will not fray, Heckmondwike’s Diamond entrance flooring suits this purpose. Made in the UK and available in 10 standard and 10 accent colours, Diamond can be supplied as 2m and 4m carpet, carpet tiles or loose lay mats in a variety of sizes.

Paragon Carpets and its sister company Mat.Works Flooring Solutions, have teamed up to deliver a total soft floorcoverings package for Rotherham City Council’s new offices. Paragon had a number of carpet tiles specified on the project including four colourways of the new Strobe product, Lime, Plasma, Spark and Ignite (Lime green is a bespoke to the client), which was used extensively in breakout zones and meeting rooms. The new linear patterned carpet features a flash of lime through the pile, which was what the council in-house team was looking for. Trade Carpets, the main flooring contractor worked closely with Master Matting Installations (a specialist matting installer) to deliver the entrance matting part of the flooring package. Mat.Works supplied the main entrance matting areas incorporating Smart Scraper matting system, which can be used outside. Platoon Brush secondary carpet matting incorporated the councils crest. Andy Gordon, national sales manager for Mat.Works said: ‘The main entrance threw up a number of issues in terms of getting the correct amount of matting into the installation. We brought the smart scraper element outside which meant we didn’t have to encroach onto the inner floor.’ Complementary colours were used in the main offices to define space in an open plan environment. Blocks of plain pile Colour Works were used in conjunction with a complementary specially designed Strobe linear product to define the spaces between the workstations and the walkways.

Plastic Extruders supplied Frontrunner XT matting for the Raiffeisen Bank in Gossau, Switzerland to provide safe passage for pedestrians on three footbridges linking the car-park to the bank’s entrance. The original safety problem occurred when the steel bridges got cold very quickly which in turn made the walkway surface icy and slippery. The 100% vinyl open grid matting, manufactured by Plastic Extruders, was specified by flooring specialist Wibatec. It is designed to be effective for tough external environments as its diamond cut surface is said to provide increased traction and safety underfoot even in wet and icy conditions. The close grid construction also makes it heel and wheel-proof and is flexible enough to contour over the curve of the bridge, says the manufacturer. Frontrunner XT is supplied in rolls of 10m and in widths of 60, 91 and 120cm. It forms part of the Frontrunner entrance flooring system range which comprises mats suitable for different interior and exterior installations. All mats in the range can be trimmed on site to fit different shapes, such as within revolving doors or irregular shaped matwells. Other external options include Frontrunner Brush with nylon brush inserts to combat severe soiling and Frontrunner Brush Wide with an extra wide grid.

Syncros Entrance Matting Systems has a new blog presented by general manager John Morgan, including information on the products, installations and company and staff news.
