Safety flooring plays a key role in helping to prevent accidents:

Altro floors and walls were specified for a new cookery school run by celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager in the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
Located in a three-storey Regency-style building it includes a domestic school, professional school, a deli and café, as well as event space.
Rosemary Shrager, a former I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here contestant teamed up with executive chef John Rogers to offer one day and half day courses. A Chef’s Table dining experience is also held every Friday and Saturday evening.
Altro recommended a wood-look, sparkle-free safety flooring for public areas where spills may create a slip hazard. The product’s warm, natural tones reportedly create a welcoming yet practical environment and where safety and aesthetics cannot be compromised.
For the kitchen, Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock wall cladding were specified. Stronghold 30 is designed for use in wet and greasy conditions where spillages are likely.
The product has Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance in areas of heavy traffic. It also offers long-term durability and ease of cleaning and its 3mm thickness provides added noise reduction, comfort and strength underfoot.
Whiterock is a sheet extruded from a high quality, food safe PVCu polymer for operating temperatures up to 60degC. It is said to be easy to clean, impact resistant and grout-free. It meets current EU Directives on health and hygiene.
The installation was carried out by Elite Interiors. Project manager Jeremy Smith said: ‘The client knew exactly what they wanted and there was quite a tight timescale to get the job done. It took us around four weeks with a team of four fitters.
‘We installed 160sq m of wood-look flooring from Altro in the domestic kitchen, with 128sq m of Stronghold 30 and 145sq m of Whiterock in the kitchen.
‘As an Altro Premier Installer we have a great deal of experience in working with their floors and walls.’
Plastic Extruders says its Vynagrip is a durable and hardwearing matting that is widely used in all types of working environments to provide a permanent slip-resistant surface in temperatures down to -26degC.
Vynagrip’s surface, described as extra aggressive and deep etched, reportedly provides a slip-resistant performance of R11 when tested to DIN 51130.
Its non-porous 100% vinyl composition reportedly makes it resistant to acids, oils and fats and therefore suitable for use in food storage and preparation areas.
It can be easily rolled up to facilitate cleaning while its open grid construction allows liquids and debris waste to fall through, thereby further reducing the risk of slipping or tripping, says the manufacturer.
For example, a well-known fast food restaurant chain uses Vynagrip in frozen and chilled rooms.
Since these areas often experience temperatures lower than -20degC, it is vital to ensure safety underfoot and to protect workers from slipping on the frozen and icy floors.
Vynagrip can be supplied in standard modules of 80 x 120cm or 100 x 150cm while rolls can be 5m or 10m long and in widths of 60, 91 or 122cm. Standard colours are red, blue or black. The black version is manufactured from post-industrial recycled material and is fully recyclable.
Polyflor says its customers continue to use its flagship Polysafe ranges, Wood FX, Modena and Arena PUR. All are stocked in depth and competitively priced from Polyflor’s network of distributor partners.
These high clarity safety floors unite the worlds of design and function, offering modern effects with built-in sustainable wet slip resistance.
All products achieve 36+ in the Pendulum Wet Test with full conformance to HSE Guidelines and the EN 13845 50,000 cycles abrasion test.
Polysafe Wood FX, Modena and Arena feature Polysafe PUR maintenance enhancement reportedly tried, tested and trusted across many commercial and residential facilities.
Cross-linked and UV cured, Polysafe PUR is described as a super strength polyurethane reinforcement designed to make these safety floor ranges even easier to clean, providing optimum appearance and colour retention as well as improved soil release, a key requirement in both front and back of house areas.
T&R Floor Covering Distributors has added to its stockholding Polyflor’s new safety vinyl sheet flooring, Polysafe Arena PUR, which includes 12 designs, reflecting current surface trends whilst offering sustainable wet slip resistance.
All products are available from T&R stock, for standard two-day delivery or next day, by request.
Arena PUR is developed for residential and social housing applications, as well as heavy commercial, such as education, healthcare, office and leisure.
Design styles include authentic reproductions of natural stone, concrete, textile and linear concepts, with the colour palette reflecting natural and outdoor materials. Clear aluminium oxide particles are incorporated on the surface and through the performance layer for increased traction, thus generating sustainable wet slip resistance. Polysafe PUR reinforcement also provides easy maintenance and optimum appearance levels.
Conforming to European safety flooring standard EN 13845 and meeting the 50,000 cycles abrasion test for durability, Arena is classified as low slip potential, achieving 36+ on the Pendulum Wet Test, with a surface roughness of 20 microns +.
It is also fully compliant with HSE Guidelines and UK Slip Resistance Group Guidelines (2011). The product contains recycled material and is 100% recyclable through the Recofloor vinyl take back scheme.
Other Polyflor ranges available from T&R stock include Polysafe Modena PUR, a slip-resistant floor featuring a high-clarity, micro-granite appearance.
Modena comes in 14 shades, with colour options spanning from earthy grey and moss tones to vibrant citrus shades.
T&R also offers a range of accessories, including welding cables, floor trims, PVC skirtings, stair nosings and adhesives.
Tarkett describes its Safetred Design Collection as a complete package of commercial safety flooring solutions with a fresh, aesthetically pleasing aspect.
‘This range incorporates a decorative safety flooring toolkit,’ says Steve Urwin, UK marketing manager for Tarkett. ‘Superbly rendered ceramic tile effects are now available for the first time alongside wood and stone visuals. We offer this collection in three constructions including a textile backed loose lay version which can be installed over subfloors up to 90%RH and an acoustic foam backing option’.
Tarkett promotes this new product with accessories, including Tarkospray commercial grade aerosol adhesive and VS100 ventilated skirting, designed to allow subfloor moisture to evaporate over time.
‘This range still benefits from our special ultimate flexibility formulation, making it easy to handle even in cold conditions.’
The collection includes a new range of five Safetred Ceramic tile effects, plus the established Safetred Wood and Safetred Natural ranges.
There are as total of 26 colours in each of three constructions: Compact, Loose Lay and Acoustic, suitable for schools, hospitality and leisure centres, housing, hospitals and care homes.
Manufactured in the UK, the Safetred Design Collection uses a minimum 37% recycled content and is the first sustainable safety flooring available in a tile design. It is available from distributors nationwide.
