Winning Floors

Sports flooring faces additional demands:

Flowcrete UK saysits FlowSport flooring system delivers a flexible composite surface, geared up to the needs of sporting environments.

Designed for areas including gymnasiums and indoor sports venues, 60% of FlowSport’s composition is based on recycled vehicle tyres.

When applied over a suitable base, FlowSport is said to provide a resilient, uniform, seamless and durable finish, which is hard- wearing, and both abrasion and impact resistant.

The product is also claimed to eliminate glare and light reflection, be easy to clean and maintain while providing a cushioned effect that delivers spring and give in the floor.

Court lines and area markings can be applied in international colours and the product can be installed in conjunction with Flowcrete’s Isowarm underfloor heating system.

Forbo’sflockedfloorcovering Flotex was recommended for the gymnasium area at De Vere Village Hotel, Manchester Ashton by the flooring contractor for the project, Gravity Flooring, a member of the CFA. The hotel boasts a well- equipped health club with the latest technologically advanced fitness machinery, a 25m swimming pool, whirlpool spa and sauna.

Flotex, which has over 70m electrostatically flocked fibres per sq m, is said to offer the hard- wearing and washable characteristics of a resilient floor, yet also the warmth, comfort and acoustic properties of carpet.
Being completely waterproof, it is claimed to be the only truly washable textile floorcovering. Standard cleaning methods can be used to remove body sweat, machine oils and general soiling, according to Forbo.

Flotex features Sanitized, a antimicrobial treatment designed to migrate from the adhesive into the backing and onto the flock, said to maintain a consistent surface layer even after multiple cleaning cycles.

Sanitized is also designed to prevent the growth of bacteria including MRSA and E.coli, moulds and stale odour development.

Flotex is reportedly one of only two floorcoverings to be scientifically tested by Allergy UK and awarded the Seal of Approval (the other being Forbo’s Marmoleum).

Flotex Sottsass wool was specified throughout the gym area in a sophisticated grey, matching the hotel’s corporate branding. Sottsass wool is said to play on the texture of the individual strands of natural fibres, giving a sense of depth and warmth. www.forbo-

Gerflor boastsover60years’ experience in manufacturing synthetic indoor sports flooring with a wide portfolio to suit bespoke needs.

Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring is reportedly internationally approved and a preferred solution for many national and international sports governing bodies.

The company, through IHF and FIVB agreements, supplied courts for handball and volleyball tournaments during the 2012 London Olympics. Taraflex has been selected for 10 consecutive Olympic Games from Montreal 1976 to London 2012 for indoor surfaces like handball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

As well as providing specialist sports surfaces, it is designed for multi-use applications in community sports centres, schools, universities and other learning facilities. In total, 70,000m sq m of the product has been fitted in sports halls worldwide, it is claimed.

Taraflex Sport M Comfort caters for multi-sport venues with a P3 classification. Sport M Evolution and Sport M Performance products offer P1 and P2 classifications, relating to point- elastic floor force reduction classes in the European Standard. Taraflex Multi- Use 6.2 is compliant with EN 14904, the key definition of the technical and essential characteristics of a multi-sports floor.

Fast track installation options enable the floor to be laid within three days. Sports M (Eco-Fit) can reportedly be installed directly over the existing floor, saving 40% on flooring cost and reduce downtime significantly. The Eco-Fit allows fast, free floating installation while the Dry-Tex System enables installation onto humid subfloors. Low and high profile undercarriage systems are also available.

Gerflor’s Creation Clic can reportedly also be used in most areas of gyms and health clubs, including the fitness suite, restaurant, bar, reception and corridors. GTI Fitness Tile offers similar benefits coupled with durability for free-weight environments, changing rooms and corridors.

InstaFloor supplied InstaSport SP22/43 cradle and batten undercarriage system with an Herculan MF 5 + 2 (7mm) seamless, eco-friendly, polyurethane sports surface for the sports hall at the new Kingswood Arts College, Hull. Underfloor heating is incorporated.

The InstaFloor products reportedly produced a high quality Combined-Elastic (Type C4) impact energy absorbing sports floor system complying with EN 14904 (Shock Absorption: 63.6%; Vertical Deformation: 3.06mm; Basketball Rebound: 92.1%) and BS 6399: Part 1.

Once the DPM was laid on the uneven concrete subfloor, the InstaSport rubber crumb sports
cradles were set out and laser levelled to ensure a completely level finished surface. Timber battens were positioned and the system was adjusted to create an overall finished floor height of 150mm.

The service void accommodated an underfloor heating system fitted between the cradles and battens, and the floor included anchor point sockets for removable posts and stanchions for sports such as netball and badminton.

M a p e i flooring installation products were used at a new sports facility at Swadlincote Extra Care Village. The 120sq m sports floor was installed by FBI Flooring using Mapei adhesives and substrate preparation products. Ultrabond Eco VS90 multi-purpose acrylic based vinyl adhesive, Eco 170 carpet adhesive, Eco
520 linoleum adhesive, Eco Tack carpet tile tackifier and Mapeproof ESM surface applied damp proof membrane were used in the new build residential and care facility in Derbyshire, which houses 88 apartments, a restaurant and sports facilities.

Ultrabond Eco adhesives are described as solvent-free, certified GEV Emicode EC1 for low VOC emissions while providing a strong bond for use in environments where heavy foot traffic is anticipated, such as sporting facilities. Mapeproof ESM is solvent-free with low odour suitable for inhabited areas.

Reflex Sports’maple strip sports floor, designed by Kährs, was installed at Sylvia Young Theatre School, London. Specified in all 10 studios, the installation spanned over 1,000sq m. All flooring was installed by Reflex for main contractor, Coniston. It was laid over a resilient understructure system and a durable sports finish satin lacquer was applied after installation. Established in 1981 in London’s Drury Lane, The Sylvia Young Theatre School is a specialist performing arts school offering vocational and academic education. It recently relocated to a converted church in Nutford Place, London Borough of Westminster.

As part of the extensive refurbishment, the Kährs-designed sports floor was specified for performance benefits and to complement the ecclesiastic architecture. The EN Standard compliant system reportedly gives superior shock absorption, with protection against injury and improved energy return. The sports and performance prefinish also provided the correct traction, whilst promoting easy maintenance.
