How Important Is The Texture?

In this article, we will discuss why it is essential to prepare London flooring properly when a surface damp-proof membrane (DPM) is specified. It is a well-known fact that one of the main reasons behind floor failing is the moisture. In order to prevent this issue, London flooring specialists recommend the use of a surface DPM. The latter have been designed for many years to battle the rapid release of moisture from a subfloor, in other words, to protect the smoothing compound, adhesives and floorcoverings when the moisture level raises above 75% RH.

  • To begin with, let`s see how exactly DPM works. London flooring professionals explain that a continuous film is created across the floor at a certain thickness to ensure that protection is provided. It is of utmost importance to apply the product in the correct manner – it should be bonded to the selected substrate appropriately and the subsequent application of smoothing primers and compounds must be carried out properly. Regular DPMs such as epoxy are curing products which means that the applied amount is the amount of product left after curing because it is a 100% active ingredient. It is very important to choose the correct notch trowel to achieve a good coverage.
  • London flooring experts point out that the prime issue that may arise is the state of a subfloor. The problem occurs because some subfloors are not suitable for applying DPM owing to different reasons. Some of them are – damage from water-spotting; exposed fibres; lots of undulations with shadowing of the rebars within; exposed aggregate protruding from the concrete; very open texture. If the pricing is based on a specification you may find it confusing when London flooring contractors say the subfloor isn’t appropriate for the proposed application. Directly, this doesn`t concern the manufacturers of the flooring but it can create tension between them and the contractors.
  • What is the resolution to the aforementioned problems? London flooring specialists say that if a pre-smooth of the subfloor is proposed before the DPM application. If a correct moisture-tolerant high-bonding smoothing compound systems are used, they will provide a flat surface and they allow to apply a DPM to at the needed coating. If the surface is not flat the DPM use will be excessive and fill all the hollows and voids. It will also leave concern if the film is continuous and whether the thickness is enough.
  • If fibres are protruding, London flooring experts say that it is almost impossible to get the DPM continuous as they will pop back up and displace the DPM from the subfloor. The surface should be pre-smoothed or the fibres should be burnt off. In case of protruding aggregate, it will be more cost-effective to grind away the areas. A smart option is to double DPM application onto these areas by brush. The subfloors need a reduced coverage rate to assure there is enough product to soak into the surface and give the required film thickness.

A distinguished flooring company in London explains that if the film thickness, the floor will be functional and long-lasting. Save yourself expenses and don`t fail to do that!
