Flooring plays an important role in shopping and retail locations:

Coba Flooring has introduced a collection of ‘new generation’ luxury vinyl tiles. Patented Tough-Lock Naturals are designed to have the appearance of ceramic tiles, but feature all the benefits of traditional vinyl, starting with ease and speed of installation.
The vinyl tiles have what is described as a rather nifty interlocking system that is totally concealed once installed, thereby looking like any other ‘ceramic/terrazzo’ tile. This is made all the more authentic with the use of co-ordinating grouting.
A finishing profile for neat edging is available for laid to surface installations. The tiles are loose laid to the floor and do not require any adhesive.
According to Coba, little or no subfloor preparation is required and they can even be installed over existing floorcoverings, as well as uneven or poor surfaces. This makes the product suitable for installations, such as supermarkets or other retail outlets, where ‘down time’ for floor refurbishment can involve temporary closure and loss of revenue.
Another benefit of Tough-Lock Naturals is, as the name suggests, their durability. These robust, dimensionally stable tiles with glass fibre reinforcement can reportedly withstand wheeled traffic up to 1,000kg making them suitable for heavy duty installations.
The tiles are also said to look great and give a modern twist to different commercial environments. Choose from Terrazzo, Clay, Rustic, Granite, Sandstone, Marble Grey and Volcano. Each tile measures 450mm x 450mm (including 2mm grout edging).
Junckers high quality solid hardwood flooring was supplied to fashion company Noa Noa for its concept store on Strøget in central Copenhagen. To add a natural, warm feel to the monochrome interiors scheme, the store designers opted for Single Stave Blocks in Black Oak, Junckers’ updated take on the traditional parquet floor, using longer than average staves.
The floor has been finished in Rustic Black Oil, for a matt finish said to give an instant vintage feel to the wood, with a patina which will only get better with time, it is claimed.
Junckers solid hardwood floors are said to be a popular choice in the retail sector as they are durable, easy to maintain and add natural warmth to a shop interior. In addition to over 100 options, there is also the possibility to create a bespoke floor working with Junckers’ design department.
Kährs wood flooring in an exclusive design was installed at Hackett on Regent Street, following an earlier installation in Paris. Home of ‘essential British kit’ for men, the west London based store is Hackett’s international flagship.
Kährs rustic, white-toned Oak Maggoire floor was chosen to reflect Hackett’s luxury brand ethos, authentic style with a refreshing, distinctive twist.
The new store occupies the former Ferrari merchandise outlet and spans three-storeys. It was delivered by ISG following a 13-week fast-track fit out programme. The high quality refurbishment follows an earlier refit at Hackett’s Boulevard des Capucines store in Paris, also carried out by ISG and where Kährs was also specified.
Part of the Da Capo Collection, Kährs Oak Maggoire has a brushed, handscraped and bevelled finish designed to reinforce its wide board format and lively wood grain. A white nature oil prefinish is said to provide a tactile and durable surface, giving the floor a contemporary edge.
Karndean DesignFlooring was selected by pet supplies specialist Pets Corner for its new-look store design.
Moving away from an industrial look and introducing a contemporary design scheme throughout, Pets Corner replaced an existing resin floor with Karndean’s Opus Niveus (WP411) for a warm and inviting finish.
‘We wanted a product offering the authentic look of a traditional wooden floor but without the drawbacks of natural timber,’ says Matthew Harding, store development manager of Pets Corner.
He adds: ‘Our stores need to withstand heavy footfall and must be pet friendly. We were impressed with the look and durability of Karndean flooring, which is also easy to clean and maintain.
Pets Corner specified Karndean flooring for 13 stores nationwide including Stoke, Poole and Alton, with a further 10 stores planned in 2014.
Paul Barratt, md of Karndean Designflooring said: ‘With its extra-large plank design, our Opus collection completes Pets Corner’s fresh and contemporary new look.’
Polyflor has developed its Expona Design and Commercial luxury vinyl tile collections mindful of the needs of high footfall retail interiors, providing design-led and practical flooring for heavy commercial environments.

The Expona Design and Commercial offer comprises two design focussed collections across two heavy commercial specifications.
Expona Design PUR incorporates a 3mm gauge and 0.7mm wear layer, whereas Expona Commercial PUR features a 2.5mm gauge and a 0.55mm wear layer.
The product is further enhanced with PUR, Polyflor’s robust polyurethane reinforcement which is cross linked and UV cured for superior cleaning benefits, thus reducing maintenance costs in high traffic areas.
Expona achieves a BRE A+ rating and Indoor Air Comfort Gold, assuring that VOC emissions are below globally determined levels.
All Expona flooring is 100% recyclable via the Recofloor recycling scheme and contains an average of 40% recycled content. Sampling is available to order free of charge.
Schlüter has helped to launch one of America’s fastest growing restaurant chains in the UK.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries used an array of Schlüter-Systems products to make its new restaurant floors were safe and secure.
The burger brand, which has been running in America since 1986, has opened a dozen new restaurants in Greater London, Manchester and Birmingham, with its first UK restaurant opening in London’s Covent Garden.
Schlüter products specified included Ditra matting and Schiene edge profiles. The installations were carried out over two weeks.
The Schlüter products are said to offer high durability when coping with heavy pedestrian traffic, working beneath flooring to provide the ultimate in security whilst also offering an aesthetically pleasing and discreet appearance on the surface.
Contractor Geoff Henderson commented, ‘I often use Schlüter’s products and find them to be of high quality.’
Schlüter-Ditra is a polyethylene membrane with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration with an anchoring fleece laminated to its underside.
The tile adhesive mechanically locks with the cut-back indentations on the topside of the matting, eliminating the need for further anchoring mesh, which would inhibit the movement capabilities of the mat.
This patented geometry allows Ditra to absorb lateral movement in each direction, something that other products cannot reliably achieve.
Schlüter-Schiene, the original threshold strip, is designed to finish tiled surfaces and protect the outer edges of ceramic and natural stone floorcoverings from mechanical impact.
Five Guys was established in the US town of Arlington, Virginia. Four teenage boys received a mandate from their parents: ‘Start a business or go to college.’
A year later, the first Five Guys restaurant opened with their father joining the boys as the fifth guy.

T&R Floor Covering Distributors has a new range of resilient floors, Fusion Flooring, which includes 15 wood and stone effect designs that are suitable for retail applications, from niche boutique to heavy-traffic shop environments.
As well as providing an authentic surface finish, the floors also have R10 slip resistance and a variety of environmental benefits; they comprise on average 40% recycled content, are low VOC, 100% recyclable and have an A+ Generic BRE rating.
Fusion Flooring’s Wood Collection includes 11 wood plank designs, from Royal White Oak to deep-toned Willow Brown Oak, measuring 184.2 x 1219.2mm.
The Stone Collection comprises four designs: Ivory Limestone, Organic Fossilstone, Urban Concrete and Black Riven Slate, each measuring 457.2 x 457.2mm.
All floors feature a bevel effect on all four sides, which adds depth and detail to the finished look. To add further definition to the retail design, Fusion Grouting, Marquetry or Feature Strips can be laid between the square tiles or planks.
All Fusion Floors are said to be suitable for applications from heavy-traffic commercial to residential, and come with a 10-year commercial and 15-year domestic guarantee.
They are available from extensive T&R stock for standard two-day delivery or next day, by request, alongside a wide variety of accessories, including screeds, adhesives, tools and workwear.
Uzin products were used to refurbish the floors at Selfridges Birmingham, where over 2200sq m of linoleum flooring was installed over an existing resin floor. A Uzin system was employed.
Thousands of customers walk through the store every year so the client required a robust and stylish finish.
The old resin floor could have caused problems, so the flooring contractor, CD Northern, a member of the CFA, turned to Uzin due to their extensive experience and expertise when working with technical demanding projects.
The innovative system, combining several high quality Uzin products reportedly ensured the project was completed without any difficulties.
CD Northern removed any debonded resin and filled with Uzin NC182 repair compound.
Uzin PE 280 primer, Uzin RR 201 repair fleece and Uzin NC 160 smoothing compound were then used to strengthen and level the substrate, before the linoleum was installed using Uzin KE 2428 multi-purpose adhesive.
