Going By The Board
The suppliers of wood and laminate flooring offer an enormous choice:
Atkinson & Kirby has introduced four additions to its top end Diamond Plus range, said to offer the chance ‘to capture a touch of history and luxury all in one hardwood floor’.
The product is described as uncompromising quality. Engineered in construction, all boards are reportedly suitable for use with underfloor heating.
Handscraped Farmhouse Oak, dubbed as ‘full of charm and character’, is brushed and natural oiled with a light brown finish designed to add a warm feeling to any interior.
Barn and Ranch Oak are two boards with visual saw marks; light brown and pale grey brushed and natural oiled respectively.
Finally, Mill Oak is an unfinished (15/4 x 189 x 2200mm) board with open joints and randomly connected butterfly shaped jointing wedges, to give an even more rustic look and feel. The variety of finishes and board sizes available within this premium range are said to create floors that are full of beautiful character, making them suitable for the most discerning tastes.
Bamboo Flooring Co says it provides true care and attention at every step of the way to produce stunning eco-friendly flooring.
The company’s products, as well as the process in which the bamboo is cut, treated and protected, are said to be environmentally friendly.
It is for this reason that it received a FSC, Forest Stewardship Council accreditation.
Using ‘one of the most well designed click systems in the world’; the established Uniclic range creates a seamless surface whilst the interlocking boards are said to ensure firm flooring.
For a durable finish The Bamboo Flooring Company also produces a range of Bona coated flooring and skirting designed to give an anti-scratching protective layer whilst retaining the natural look.
Bostik supplies a range of adhesives designed for use with wooden flooring.
The established Laybond L19 Wood Bond is claimed to be able to bond all types of wood flooring over most common substrates, including asphalt.
It is also said to be compatible with underfloor heating, an increasingly popular choice but one that needs products to be carefully chosen to avoid problems.
Also in the range is L16 Wood Bond, a heavy duty rigid adhesive for bonding solid and engineered flooring to sound, dry substrates, and reportedly also suitable for use with warm water underfloor heating systems.
L18 PU Wood Bond is a flexible adhesive for batten bonding wood flooring, including engineered parquet, wood mosaic panels and wood laminate, to most substrates.
Flooring Sales has been appointed UK distributor of Cinzento Versailles panels. This is a comprehensive range of quality European panels which can be supplied in solid or engineered format (suitable for use with underfloor heating).
The panels can also be supplied unfinished or prefinished depending on the client’s needs. Flooring Sales can supply bespoke flooring for any project and recently supplied flooring (made to the client’s specifications) to the Swedish embassy in London.
The company, based on the A3 close to the M25, is long established. It stocks Boen, Junckers, Sika, Mirka, Osmo, Lecol, Fein and Festool, and is reputedly the UK’s largest Bona distributor, delivering materials to the trade throughout the UK.
Flooring Sales says its sales team ensures a high standard of service as well as quality advice.
Gekko claims that its adhesive applicator saves users so much time (and worry) that they are able to focus more on running their business and not fret about whether they should be on site, putting together a quote, visiting a new client, paying a trip to the merchant, chasing up payment or ensuring that materials are on-site at the right time.
Used for fixing wooden flooring, either solid or engineered, the battery-powered applicator has reportedly been proved to cut jobbing time by as much as 30%. It is also claimed to dramatically reduce the amount of waste produced, while saving money at the same time.
Alex Nunn, marketing director at Gekko says: ‘Time is money and by using the Gekko, contractors have more time get on with work in hand, win new projects and manage current jobs.’
InstaLay says that its high performance, self-adhesive, acoustic underlay, with its innovative ‘Peel & Stick’ system, provides a superior underlay system for solid, engineered and laminate wood floors.
Available in 3mm and 5mm versions, InstaLay comes with either ‘high grab’ adhesive, for solid or engineered tongue and grooved floors, or ‘low grab’ for engineered and laminate click systems.
Instalay says the wood flooring is positioned and the release film pulled from under the planks which are simply pressed onto the adhesive layer which bonds the wood floor together.
Acoustic performance exceeds the requirements of Document E, with InstaLay 30 giving 23dB and InstaLay 50 26dB. Being manufactured using recycled rubber crumb from worn tyres, the ‘environmentally friendly’ product is designed to reduce the ambient noise created by foot traffic on wood flooring.
InstaLay reportedly does not collapse or degrade over time and significantly cuts installation times by minimising subfloor preparation and eliminating the need for any wet adhesives, making it quick, clean and very cost-effective.
Junckers claims that its metallic finishes (in gold, silver, bronze) are the next big trend in interiors.
One of Junckers most exclusive floors, solid Oak Golden Pearl is said to have a shimmery golden glaze and reflects natural light beautifully.
The specially developed pearlescent finish is sealed with UltraMatt lacquer for durability and easy maintenance.
Junckers’ Design Collection offers a wide range of creative possibilities with new finishes, reflective surfaces, enhanced textures, bright colours and pearlescent shine on naturally stable, solid wood floors.
Available as plank or two strip, structural or overlay floors, 129/140/185mm wide boards.
Kährs has introduced a collection of rustic one-strip floors. A celebration of the company’s Swedish tradition and fine craftsmanship, the Founders Collection includes eight new oak designs and joins its Original Range.
Each floor is named after a member of the Kährs’ family that founded the company in 1857, and features a combination of hand-crafted finishing treatments.
Designs in the collection include Oak Fredrik, Gustaf, Olof, Sture, Johan and Ulf. Each board measures 2420 x 187 x 15mm and has an individually-toned Nature oil prefinish.
Heavy brushing, handscraping and smoking emphasise the lively grained timber and tactile finish, whilst a distinct bevelled edge complements the boards’ single plank format.
All floors from the new Founders Collection feature Kährs ethical, high performance construction. Based on the company’s original design, patented in 1941, the award-winning construction uses sustainable hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below.
This design, alongside the Woodloc joint, is said to provide greater stability, promote fast installation and eliminate gapping throughout the lifetime of the floor.
Floors are finished with water-based stains and solvent-free oil and can be laid on most dry, level surfaces and over underfloor heating systems, according to the company.
Pallmann says its training courses help participants to create and maintain beautiful wooden floors.
The ‘straight talking’ courses from the experts at the company walk you through the five steps to the installation and maintenance for wood floors.
The free sessions are run at the company’s technical forum in Rugby. For more information or to book call: 01788 530 080.
Pallmann wood floor installation systems are claimed to be fail safe when used correctly.
A two year warranty is offered when you attend each of the Five Steps Training sessions for the installation, renovation and maintenance of wood floors.
T&R Floor Covering Distributors has introduced a new Oak Essentials Range to its collection of wood floors. Available from stock, the Kährs product has neutral packaging and provides a cost-focused one-strip option, said to fill the gap for a high performance, quality board at a budget price.
All Essentials floors feature the single plank design and bevelled edge. Boards measure 1860 x 189 x 14mm and benefit from a multi-layered construction and Kährs Woodloc joint.
A choice of three durable pre-finishes is also available: satin lacquer, matt lacquer and nature.
Each of the three Essentials floors is offered with a 25-year guarantee.
The boards can be laid on most dry, level surfaces including concrete, wood and particle board, and are said to be suitable for installation over both capillary and electric underfloor heating systems.
Other new products in T&R’s spring/summer range include Kährs Founders Collection.
Ted Todd has introduced a 20mm engineered range. Strada matches the highest quality 20mm engineered FSC certified European Oak boards with the exacting standards demanded by the best flooring specifiers.
Pre-finished with a 12 coat lacquer finish, this range is said to be extremely durable and easy to maintain, standing up to the most demanding of projects.
Offered in 10 colours ranging from cool, crisp whites and greys, through the rich tones of nature’s finest palette to a contemporary gun metal grey and dual tone black, Strada is available from stock, suitable for installation over underfloor heating.
Timbmet, a major UK timber distributor, has published a comprehensive guide to its premium commercial and domestic flooring range.
The 20 page brochure details Tavernflor solid hardwood, Legacy, Silkflor, Silkflor Prem and Silkflor Vintage engineered hardwood floors. All are available unfinished, oiled or lacquered.
The new brochure includes information on Timbmet’s Lobo vinyl plank flooring which has the aesthetic appeal of solid wood but is reportedly scratch, indentation and slip-resistant. It is also said to be naturally sound absorbent and offers ease of maintenance.
To complete the range Timbmet supplies a selection of Parallel mouldings; a white oak scotia bead and a hardwood oak radiator pipe cover.
Also offered is the Bona range of care and maintenance products.
Victorian Woodworks has a new London showroom off Berkeley Square. With its quality, artisan finishing and variety of traditional and contemporary styles, the company reports that its timber floors are used in prestigious residential and commercial properties.
The new showroom features a broad range of collections with over 80 different timber floors on display, all handmade in the UK at its Cheshire factory. From traditional to contemporary, the range extends from 400-year-old antique and reclaimed floors to new wood floors in unusual colourways.
The company has a consultation service offering expert advice on selecting timber floors from many different styles, textures and finishes, with technical advice on subfloor preparation, installation and maintenance.
Prices start at around £75sq m up to around £400sq m for premium antique wood flooring.
Warmup says the 3iE energy-monitor thermostat with its underfloor heating is designed to ensure that the temperature where the wood floor meets the heated subfloor never exceeds 27degC.
This helps avoid excessive drying-out problems, which may lead to stress on the wooden floor and possible distortion issues.
The temperature control is achieved by placing a remote thermostatic sensor device below the wood floor to accurately limit the temperature.
Further, once installed, the 3iE energy-monitor thermostat is designed to monitor and help control energy usage and costs, and is claimed to save customers up to 10% or more on energy usage.
Warmup recommends that its underfloor heating is installed with its own brand insulation materials to provide the best and most responsive system. Then all that is required is to lay the heating system and the wooden or laminate floor on top.
Where the installation method involves nailing the flooring to the subfloor, Warmup offers technical support (available 24/7/365 and online ‘live’ chat) to assist installers through this process.
The company offers additional security with its SafetyNet Installation Guarantee. Should the heating system be accidentally damaged during its installation, Warmup will replace it free of charge.
