Harrogate Showcases Apprenticeship Skills
A FEATURE of the Flooring Show in Harrogate was the the Apprentice of the Year 2014 skills competition between Accrington & Rossendale (Accross) College and Coleg Cambria.
The three day event, which attracted enormous attention during the show, was designed to showcase the standard of training that both colleges offered on their two year apprenticeships courses.
In particular there were many new apprenticeship enquiries with support from existing manufacturers being strengthened.
Both lads competing have just completed their two year apprenticeships and it was a very close run contest.
Dean Davies of Wilmac Flooring, who represented Coleg Cambria, narrowly took the winner’s trophy, with Darren Simpson of Active Flooring, representing Accross College, just being pipped to the top prize and walking as an honourable runner up.
The first day of the competition involved the two competitors in ply lining the full work area (3m x 3m) before mixing and applying Arditex NA as well as Bostik’s fine finish. Many visitors commented on the high standard of work that the lads were producing.
On day two the two apprentices had to template Gerflor’s Tarasafe Ultra H2O to a section of the rig demonstrating the cap and cove/site form method using AF150 adhesive.
They also installed Polyflor’s Camaro LVT’s to another section of the area incorporating a one plank border with the field being laid on the diagonal before inserting a water jet cut logo using Bostik’s PS adhesive.
On the final day, their task was to prepare the flat area and winding staircase using Tredaire Softwalk and Duralay Treadmore underlays from Interfloor before stretch fitting Cormar’s Sensation carpet using the correct method and techniques.
The area included a section of entrance matting (supplied by Heckmondwike FB) to be centralised and fitted.
The trophies were kindly presented by Wendy Adams, event director of the Flooring Show.
Tim Green, Steve Davies and Anthony Sturgess. Accross tutor Tim Green said: ‘The amount of enquiries and support we had during the competition was incredible. We hope to repeat the contest at Harrogate next, perhaps making it bigger.
Prizes for the competitors included cash, a course at Gerflor’s training centre in France, Snickers workwear, a Polyflor training course, Janser tools, Ardex subfloor prep tools and materials.
Both colleges say a big thank you to the manufacturers who supported the competition as well as the judges who gave up their time to participate.
