Safety Flooring – Safe & Stylish
Safety flooring is becoming more decorative and being used in more locations:
Altro XpressLay safety flooring has reportedly provided a significant time and cost saving solution in the construction of the new £26m St Teilo’s Church in Wales High School, Cardiff.
The school was designed by architects Austin-Smith: Lord with classrooms clustered in blocks off a main central ‘street’.
Kate Smith, designer at Austin-Smith: Lord, said: ‘Due to the length of space of the school’s main street, the floor construction included many movement joints, which effected the movement requirements of the floor finish.
‘The main contractor, Willmott Dixon, suggested Altro XpressLay as it can be laid straight to slab with no DPM and no fixing joints. We also specified the product for the break-out areas in each block off the school’s main street. We used various wedge-shaped colours to delineate different areas.
‘And we specified the product for corridors, some classrooms, and in the toilets and changing rooms in conjunction with Altro Walkway 20, which shares the same colour palette.’
XpressLay is claimed to be the first adhesive-free, truly sustainable safety floor. It is installed using a tape system instead of adhesive, avoiding the use of a surface DPM. It can be removed post-installation, re-used elsewhere and then at the end of its life be recycled.
The range boasts 41 colours, featuring bright and subtle, sparkle-free designs and decorative chipped options. Its shared colour palette with Altro Walkway 20 allows both ranges to be combined to suit the application.
Like all Altro safety flooring products, XpressLay is said to offer sustained slip resistance for the lifetime of the product, keeping your risk of a slip or fall to just 1 in a million.
The Altro installation at St Teilo’s was by CS Flooring, Cardiff. The owner Anthony Mynett said: ‘At 6,250sq m this was the biggest XpressLay installation we have done. It shows how the product can help to cut costs and accelerate a building programme without sacrificing quality, longevity or aesthetics.
‘The beauty of installing XpressLay is that it needs no adhesive, just its own weight alone, plus some strategically placed fixing tape. It’s quick, easy and clean. This means we saved days on the installation – probably cutting it by half. The entire process took us just 12 weeks.
‘An added bonus with this product is that individual sections can easily be lifted and replaced if required, rather than having to take up the whole floor and re-adhere.’
CS Flooring also installed Altro Designer 25 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock Satins hygienic wall cladding in the school service and eating areas.
Altro Designer 25 is a 2.5mm-thick, hard-wearing safety flooring which includes coloured quartz crystals in base colours. www.altro.com

Polyflor reports that its new Polysafe Verona PUR has been used at Cardiff’s International Pool, Wales’ highly acclaimed swimming venue.
As part of a recent interior refurbishment, 240sq m of Polysafe Verona PUR sheet vinyl was installed in customer and staff areas to provide an attractive, fresh and safe surface.
Located in the heart of Cardiff Bay as part of the International Sports Village, this £23m complex boasts the largest swimming facility in the UK and features a state of the art 50m Olympic pool with seating that caters for up to 1000 visitors.
Polysafe Verona PUR was selected to provide the required durability to withstand heavy traffic in this customer area, whilst ensuring sustained wet slip resistance, ease of maintenance and an attractive carborundum-free appearance.
Specified and installed by Leeway Carpets & Flooring, Pontypridd, a combination of Polysafe Verona colours Horizon Blue 5208 and Nightfall 5207 were laid in the extensive walkway behind the spectator seating area that surrounds the venue’s 50m Olympic Pool as well as in an adjacent lighting room and judges’ meeting room.
The circulation area involved Leeway’s skilled team of fitters installing a border using Verona’s dark blue hue which was cut in on-site, complementing the main field colour.
Luke Stoneman, contracts manager at Leeway Carpets and Flooring says: ‘Our end client is delighted with the safety flooring installation. Verona colours are great and very much in tune with a leisure environment such as this. In addition and importantly for us, the product is easy to get hold of, nice to fit and easy to cut and weld. We’re certainly impressed with the overall finish.’
It is vital for a safety floor to perform in this type of leisure environment as well as other commercial and residential areas and Polysafe Verona is fully certified to achieve the same tried and tested slip resistant credentials as all Polysafe ranges.
Meeting HSE and UK Slip Group Guidelines to deliver sustained wet slip resistance throughout the guaranteed life of the product, Verona achieves 36+ on the Pendulum wet test and has a surface roughness of 20 microns and above, classifying the product as low slip potential.
The product also fully adheres to EN 13845, the European Standard for safety flooring and meets the 50,000 cycles abrasion test, ensuring the virtually invisible particles incorporated into the product are sustainable and provide continued friction over the long term.
To aid maintenance, Verona contains the established Polysafe polyurethane reinforcement (PUR) cleaning technology and through the use of natural recycled aggregates the product contains recycled content, being 100% recyclable via the Recofloor scheme. www.polyflor.com
