Craven Dunnill has now opened a dedicated contract specification zone at its Bridgnorth showroom.
The facility showcases a comprehensive library and sampling area of ceramic tiles and glass mosaics and offers customers a private, client meeting area.
Craven Dunnill works with many architects, designers, contractors and developers and this facility provides them with a comprehensive ceramic showroom and knowledge centre where they can bring their clients and discuss current projects.
The spectrum of middle to high end ceramics and mosaics on display is said to be vast and categorised by visual appearance: marble, industrial, wood, concrete, large format, polished, glass mosaics, and the like.
The specification zone is open seven days a week and is supported by a team of knowledgeable showroom staff.
Fila has introduced a protective dirt-barrier treatment for textured and unpolished porcelain tiles.
New Filastop Dirt is designed to chemically bond without leaving a film, to create invisible protection that prevents dirt build-up and to promote fast and easy cleaning.
The ready-to-use protector can be used inside and outdoors and features Micrometrics technology, an established science that reportedly respects the environment, the operator and the end-user.
Following application to a clean, dry surface, Filastop Dirt is claimed to improve surface resistance to foot traffic and general wear, while protecting against watery and oily stains, and limits water retention, as demonstrated by lab tests conducted on surfaces laid in according with UNI 11493.
The product is also UV-resistant, will not yellow and will not alter the material’s original degree of slipperiness: as proven in tests conforming to the BCRA and ASTMC 1028- 2007 methods, and in the English Standard BS 7976 Pendulum tests, says Fila. It is available in 500ml cans, each giving 15-20sq m coverage.
Fila’s Green Line surface care range won The Tile Association’s best environmental initiative award for 2014. The range includes 17 products, suitable for a range of natural surfaces and procedures. All are solvent-free and have a very low concentration of VOC’s or are VOC-free.
Green Line is part of Fila’s Green Action brand. Products include pre-grouting protectors and surface cleaners, as well as protection and stain removal solutions.
Recent introductions include LEED-approved stain-proofing protector Fila MP90 Eco Plus, developed for polished and unpolished natural stone.
Its water-based formula is claimed to cut application time by up to 80%. It is also GEV-Emicode EC1Plus certified and suitable for use on food contact areas.
Recent Fila Green Line applications include the Library of Birmingham, where slate was protected and maintained with stain-proofing Fila W68 and Fila Cleaner.
The project received The Tile Association’s best use of tile in a commercial contract 2014 award. The flooring was installed and treated by W B Simpson & Sons (Midlands).
Grespania offers Jura, said to be inspired by the stone of the same name.
This collection uses digital design technology to recreate the small fossils and seams of quartz found in the natural stone, giving it depth and life.
In addition to the natural stone-like beauty, this product offers advantages inherent in porcelain and ceramic design, lessening the fading that is characteristic of the natural stone.
Furthermore, as it is a ceramic product, the Jura collection is 100% ecologically sustainable; its production does not diminish the limited reserves of this stone.
The Jura series is available in two formats (30×60 cm and 60×60 cm), two finishes, matt and semi polished, and three colours (beige, grey and white).
The product is said to be particularly suitable for spaces where a natural stone look is desired without harming the environment.
Also offered by Grespania is Atlas. This porcelain series is described as being reminiscent of a beautiful stone although not a naturally-occurring one.
Its creation brings together attractive features of various marbles, granites, sandstones and quartzites, combining them in a field tile of soothing tones and harmonious design. This rectified porcelain multiformat (45x90cm, 60x60cm, 22x90cm, 15x60cm and 15x60cm) series is available with a natural or lappato finish and in four natural colours.
Atlas is also said to afford continuity due to its range of formats suited to all types of living space, whether bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms or bathrooms.
Kemtile laid over 770,000 Argelith tiles at AG Barr’s new canning facility at Milton Keynes.
The tiles were laid using the Kagetec vibration method, claimed to be the best tile installation system for hygienic flooring in food and beverage manufacturing areas.
The tiles are vibrated into an epoxy bed, eliminating any air pockets and providing an even surface and thus ensuring complete integrity of the finished floor.
Kemtile is the only company that has the licence to install tiles using the Kagetec system in the UK and Eire and has been licensed installers since 1998 for these countries.
Wiedemann-Technik stainless steel drains and gulleys were also installed.
Kerakoll reports that its H40 Eco Marmorex adhesive is formulated for use with delicate marbles. It is said to quickly lock in the mixing water and stop stains from forming on the surface. It is said to be a single part extra fast setting adhesive containing 68% recycled extra white Carrara particles making it very white and easy to spread.
Superflex Eco, a non-water based two-part adhesive, is formulated to counter curling and has the additional benefits of being very elastic and high grab, making it suitable for use even on deformable substrates.
It reportedly can be used on internal and external walls and floors and is light and easy to spread.
All Kerakoll’s adhesives for ceramics and stone are produced to be as friendly to the environment and kind to the health of both the people laying the tiles and those that occupy the room thereafter as possible with current technology.

Mapei has launched a flexible, water-repellent grout, Keracolor Flex. The low VOC product comes in five shades and is suitable for grout joint widths from 1-6mm.
It can be used with a wide range of surface finishes, including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass and mosaics – both internally and externally.
Following extensive research, Keracolor Flex colour options have been created to complement current tile trends; they include limestone, oyster, pearl, pebble and white sand.
Product features include resistance to water and thermal change, making Keracolor Flex suitable for wet areas, alongside underfloor heating and on external facades exposed to freeze/thaw cycles. Once cured, the new grout reportedly provides a gently textured surface, which is also resistant to abrasion, oils and alkaline-based cleaning products.
Keracolor Flex is certified GEV Emicode EC1R Plus for very low emissions of VOCs. It is available in 5kg AluPak bags, in single units or boxes of four and can be mixed with Mapei Fugolastic for application in more demanding environments.
RAK says its new Cementina tile combines a modern, tactile look with a wealth of practical benefits. Available in on-trend grey and beige, the new porcelain design has a contemporary ‘dusty’ look akin to concrete, but offers the high performance features of a modern porcelain surface. It is suitable for installation on walls and floors, and can be used indoors and outside.
Cementina tiles measure 60x60cm in a matt finish. The urban-look is achieved using the latest in digital printing technology.
Precise colour variation and image pixels are said to produce the cement-like graphic to give a pristine ‘real’ finish. RAK’s porcelain is described as being resistant to water, stains, abrasion and impact, and is fire-proof.
The range is also designed to complement RAK’s new Resort bathroom range, including sanitary ware and basins, storage and high-tech mirrors.

Ultra Floor Level IT one HDB was used to refurbish the foyer area of the Millennium Gallery, forming part of Sheffield’s Heart of the City project, a scheme that has created many new public spaces, buildings and skyscrapers.
Great Northern Tiling installed underfloor heating and 600 x 300mm polished porcelain grey tiles in the reception area of the gallery.
The work was carried out within a tight time frame and during gallery opening hours using Ultra Floor’s single part smoothing compound Level IT one HDB and tile adhesive ProFlex SP and FlexJoint grout from sister brand Ultra Tile, after the existing floorcovering and levelling compound were removed.
Level IT one HDB is described as a rapid hardening water mix compound designed to smooth undulations in cementitious floor substrates and to build depths of up to 50mm. It can be pumped or poured and has a high compressive strength of 38N/mm for use over concrete, cement, screeds and stone/tiled subfloors as well as floors with UFH.
Thereafter, the heating elements were laid, primed and a further layer of Level IT one HDB applied to encase the elements thus providing a sound foundation onto which the tiles could be fixed.
The installation was reportedly completed four days ahead of schedule due to the materials’ exceptional performance and ease of use. Ultra Floor is a brand of the Instarmac Group plc.
Ultra Tile, the adhesives, grouts and ancillaries brand from the Instarmac Group, has launched FibreGrip FX powder adhesive, the result of research into product technology and advancement, conducted in-house at the Ultra Tile premises in conjunction with industry advisors.
Using fibres was found to aid an adhesive’s capabilities, providing greater strength. The inclusion of specially selected fibres is said to make the adhesive suitable for porcelain, natural stone and quartz tiles. The reinforced grab is designed to ensure a stronger bond for fixing large format tiles.
Working with heavy tiles is notoriously difficult, so the addition of fibres means an easier job for larger formats, says Ultra Tile.
FibreGrip FX is said to offer reinforced body, creating thixotropic behaviour. This means that the product is workable but holds its density and will not slump, even under the weight of such large format tiles.
The product is reportedly suitable for wall and floor installations both inside and out. It is classified under CE marking regulations as C2 FT and is compatible with UFH systems.
Formulated for flexible working, it adheres to most common substrates including screwed and fixed over-boarded wooden floors.
It is also claimed to excel where vibration is likely. It can be laid at bed thicknesses from 3-12mm and it is said to have a pot life of 40 minutes and set within 2.5 hours.
n Ceramic Tile Merchants has completed another installation using Ultra Tile adhesives and grouts after receiving advice from the brand’s technical department.
Right Car of Hull and Beverley, a top Ford dealership in East Yorkshire wanted a major refurbishment of its Beverley showroom in readiness for the arrival of new Ford fixtures, fittings and models.
TTA member, Ceramic Tile Merchants supplied and fitted 600x300mm Ford Lightstone porcelain tiles in the new 500sq m showroom floor. Car showrooms are in demanding use and the floor must withstand the pressures of vehicle and foot traffic for many years.
Ceramic Tile Merchants sought advice from the Ultra Tile technical department on the most suitable adhesive and grout for this project. ProFlex SP and FlexJoint grout were recommended. ‘We sought advice and were delighted with the speed of response from Instarmac,’ says Garry Cammidge, md of Ceramic Tile Merchants.
Ultra Tile technical department now offers an instant chat service on the company website.
Contact can also be made by email, telephone and in person. Trained and experienced representatives can conduct site visits if required.
