Top 5 Tips on Cleaning Marmoleum Flooring for Homeowners
If you’ve decided to put down Marmoleum flooring in your home, you’ve made a great choice. It’s a 100% bio-based product, meaning that it’s very sustainable. Plus, it’s a hygienic material that has antibacterial properties.
That said, soon enough, the time will come when you need to clean your dirty Marmoleum flooring. Before you start squirting it with supermarket multi-purpose floor cleaner, pause for a moment.
Review our 5 tips on cleaning Marmoleum flooring so you can keep it in great shape for many years to come.
1. Thoroughly Remove Dust Before Cleaning
Although it is hardwearing, Marmoleum flooring maintenance includes keeping it as free as possible of dust and grit that could scratch the surface. Depending on the level of foot traffic it sees each day, it may need to be swept daily. You can also vacuum it using the hard floor setting on your vacuum cleaner.
Dry mopping is an effective alternative to sweeping. Always complete this stage before moving on to wet cleaning. Regularly mop your floor to remove the dust. Use floor cleaner when it starts getting visibly dirty.
2. If in Warranty, Stick to Forbo Marmoleum Cleaner
Marmoleum is only manufactured by one company – Forbo.
If your Marmoleum comes with a manufacturer’s warranty, read the small print very carefully. They’re going to have something to say about how you clean it and that may well include using their proprietary Forbo Marmoleum cleaning solution.
It’s not expensive and is easy to use. For a 5-litre bucket of water, you only need 250ml of cleaning solution. Soak the Marmoleum in the cleaning solution and then scrub it using a nylon pad. Then mop it away with clean water and allow it to dry.
3. Avoid High pH Cleaners
If you’re braving it with other floor cleaning products, then take care. If you use a cleaner with a high pH, i.e. one that’s very alkaline, it’ll cause damage to Marmoleum flooring. It can make it go hazy and can even cause it to become sticky – not what you want.
Investigate the pH of any floor cleaner you’re thinking of using and look for something as close to neutral as possible. Then perform a patch test on an inconspicuous spot before you clean the rest of the floor.
4. Wipe Up Spills Quickly
Damage to Marmoleum flooring can occur if spills are not cleaned quickly – especially alkaline ones. If you notice some staining after wiping up a spill, clean it using diluted Forbo Marmoleum floor cleaner. If it still does not come off, try using a small amount of the cleaner next.
Leave it on the stain for a few minutes, and then wash it away using clean water.
5. Get Into the Grooves
No discussion of Marmoleum flooring cleaning methods would be complete without mentioning textured surfaces. These can be a little harder to clean and make hiding places for grime. The solution is to use a soft-bristled nylon scrubbing brush when you deep clean your floor.
Cleaning Marmoleum Flooring Made Simple
Cleaning Marmoleum flooring is easy. Just keep on top of sweeping and mopping it and use a neutral cleaner regularly. If you’ve got textured flooring, a soft brush will make short work of anything lurking in the grooves.
