What are the different types of flooring options available?

In need of some advice in choosing a type of flooring in Westminster? With your floor being the biggest surface in your home, choosing a floor type for each room in your house is a very important decision. This decision will depend upon your budget, personal taste and room needs. Let’s explore some popular flooring options, along with their pros and cons.

This type of flooring is versatile,  making it a desirable flooring option. Some advantage of hardwood is that it can be refinished to improve quality over time, making it long-lasting and durable. It can also increase your home’s value.

On the downside, hardwood is an expensive option, and despite this, it can still end up with scratches and dents. Due to a high risk of moisture damage, it’s not suitable for bathrooms.

This type of flooring is made of plastic and is available in plank, tile, and sheet form. Some benefits of choosing this option are that it is extremely durable, water-resistant, and easy to maintain. This is a good option for your kitchen or bathroom.

Despite this, some cons of this option are that it has a lower ROI than wood and is much more expensive.

Different types of natural stones are popular flooring choices for both indoor and outdoor floors. They are favoured for being elegant, water-resistant, and long-lasting.

Whereas, a con of stone, is that it’s expensive, difficult to install and maintain, and sometimes can be slippery and feel cold.

Engineering wood

Featuring a thin layer of hardwood bonded over a plywood substrate. This type of flooring has good resistance to moisture, is DIY-friendly and is durable.

However, it can’t be refinished more than once and might sound hollow underfoot. It also emits VOCs.

Laminate uses a particleboard wood base topped by a clear plastic protective layer. This option is affordable, easily cleaned and scratch resistant.  You can also find this option in a range of styles and colours to suit your desires.

Keep in mind that laminate can chip easily and is susceptible to moisture damage.

The flooring comes in sheet form and in a range of colours and styles. What’s great is that it is affordable, eco-friendly and requires minimum maintenance.

Despite this, it might darken when exposed to sunlight and can easily get dented. Another thing to add is that linoleum won’t be suitable for bathrooms or laundry rooms due to high moisture levels.

Tile is a superb choice of flooring for moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and kitchens because it is waterproof, long-lasting, and durable.

Bear in mind that tiles are expensive and can be tricky to install. It can also feel cold and slippery underfoot.

Possibly one of the most popular options for bedrooms due to being able to come in a wide range of colours and textures, the carpet feels comfortable and soft underfoot. It’s also good for soundproofing and will help warm up a room.

However, it should be noted that carpets are more likely to stain and are quite difficult to clean.
